Until recently, I considered myself quite computer/technology savvy, but "handheld" devices and wireless networking have totally passed me by. I can barely answer my cell phone, so imagine my dismay at having to figure out which Pocket PC I need to buy.
My first impulse was to get online and google the information I need, but what I discovered was gibberish (to me, anyway). Everything I read assumes a level of knowledge that I simply don't possess. I am so far out of touch with the technology that nothing makes sense. I have never even HELD a Pocket PC in my hands, so my ignorance is staggering.
I am hoping that if I define what I need, you kind, knowledgable folks can point me in the direction of an affordable product.
My needs are VERY simple, actually -- I need a device for record keeping and nothing else. I must begin to maintain a Vehicle Travel Expense log that utilizes a specific software that is "compatible with the Palm/OS or Pocket PC." (that's a quote from the people who supply the software).
I will NOT be connecting wirelessly to the Internet, but I do need a very convenient (preferably USB) method of downloading my Daily Log into my home and Business PC. I don't need to be able to check my email, chat, or do anything else online.
I just need to be able to sit in my car with my Pocket PC and input text information about my business calls/expenses, then transfer that information to my PC.
One final thing -- I have large, slightly-arthritic hands, so ease of use is an important factor to me.
Based upon your needs I would actually consider a Palm device. You can pickup a Z22 for $100 or move to an E2 for $200. The Z22 may be a bit too small for you, but the rest are not that much larger. The Palm OS is not as robust as Windows Mobile, but if you truly just want to keep a log, then I think it will much more than meet your needs. Then, once you are more familiar with a handheld, you may decide you have other things you want to do and can move up to a different device.
All the Palms will USB connect to your PC. So will all Pocket PCs. If you really want a PPC versus Palm, I think you should again go with low cost for now.
Im surprised that schmenge didnt suggest an 8125 a device which he uses. Its a great little device and it posses a full slide out qwerty keyboard perfect for entering long text file. and since its a ppc you will have access to word and excel something you cant do with a palm well not easily. its a great device and has an ample processor and easily fits in your pocket and ontop of that you can pick one up on ebay for less than $200 so this is my suggestion. i have a few 8125s and if you have a few bucks to spend i would maybe suggest an 8525 a new version of the 8125 its a little sleeker and has twice the processing speed. I love these devices and there slide out keyboard. and without tring to plug away i sell modded versions of each if your interested pm me.
