Re-assigning buttons on the 8525

I just bought the AT&T 8525 a couple of weeks ago. Overall, it's a pretty sweet gadget and I have been having a ball learning to use it fully. One item of irritation (thus far) is that the sucker has a "PTT" button (Push To Talk) that, while certain useful to many people with Nextel Walkie Talkie like needs, if a complete pain to me. The button is right below the scroll wheel and easy to press in error. Luckily it prompts you with the "Are you sure..." message, but I would LOVE to remap this button to something more useful (voice dialing, perhaps).

Of course, it seems to be one of the buttons you cannot remap by default.

Anyone have any ideas?

Cormack

This does look like it might do the trick, but there are a few issues (known issues) section which make me want to back-up everything before trying this AND have some spare time when I do install it. Seems like you need to re-assign all the buttons once the app is installed as it takes over.

If you do install it tonight, let us know how it goes. I have downloaded, but will need to make some time to install it and fiddle later.

Hi Cormack,
I have a Cingular 8525 and have not yet installed the ATT Rom upgrade that installs Push To Talk. However, back in May after I first got the phone, I downloaded PTTfix. It is a very small app that allows you to re-map the PTT button. I re-mapped it to voice-dial, and now it is one of the best buttons on the phone, especially because I have a hard time with the softscreen phone buttons.

Bravo Baby! This is exactly the hack I was looking for! I installed it and it does EXACTLY what I wanted, and nothing more. The original file is on the XDA forums and registration is required for download. XDA is a good board, but it's silly to sign-up just to get this little file, so I have packaged it up in a ZIP and tried to upload it to the utilities group in the downloads section. I think it is waiting for the admin to approve it as it is not yet visible.
