I'd like the ability to access the internet when a WiFi connection is not available. Been thinking about buying a new mobile phone that has bluetooth modem capabilities. I would use the bluetooth connection between the phone and my pocket pc (iPac) to access the internet. Does this work well, or is it not worth the chase?
My real goal was to upgrade to a smart phone so I could carry one device. Everytime I read the reviews on a new smartphone, I get talked out of it. I always end up waiting for the next new model hoping that they finally get it right.
As a stop-gap measure, I thought that the phone modem/iPac might work for me. What do you think? Does it require any additional software for the pocket pc?
You should be able to do this provide your phone has the GPRS modem and bluetooth option. Verizon blocks this but most other providers encourage it. TMobile charges 19.99 for the ability to do this unless you're willing to use a proxy server then you can get it for 4.99.
Actually, I am using Verizon's ExpressNet service by doing a bluetooth connection between my PPC and Motorola phone. I had to get the phone's data transmission baud rate reset to a higher speed than the phone's default but Verizon tech support gave me the necessary access code. It is necessary with Verizon to make sure a particular phone supports the needed BT profile for the device to connect since they tend to hobble BT profiles and make up for it be selling a connection kit to manage the process; that software only works with desktop/laptop machines, not WM.
