I have been given a 4Gb SD card. Using Active Sync (updated to latest version), I copied my old 1Gb card's contents to my laptop which has 30Gb+ of free disk space. Then I tried copying the contents to the new card. However, I then sometimes get multiple copies of a folder with a weird name created (and that I can't delete) and multiple copies of a file called 'm'. The folder name includes punctuation marks which I understodd were illegal characters for folder names. Most folders copy OK.
At first I thought it was because my iPaq 1940 couldn't cope with the card's capacity so I put it in my 5550. Same result. I have used FlashFormat to format the card many times, using 16K and 32K 'clusters' but always get the same result. Then I thought that maybe ActiveSync was having some issue so I labouriously created the folder tree manually (rather than by dragging-and-dropping the parent). Same result.
Using my card reader results in a hang condition so that route's no good.
My next gambit is to rename the parent folder of the troublesome path, re-copy the original and then delete the gash ones. I'm not confident, though. Can anyone tell me why this happens and how to avoid it? I'd appreciate no glib "Use something other than ActiveSync" answers, please...
ActiveSync tends to clog with large file copy operations as the conduit needs to transfer to data through two different OSes, one at each end. That is why the card reader route is by far the better choice when putting large amounts of data onto a memory card. Rather than dragging the info, you could try the copy/paste route, handling one folder at a time to reduce volume. Or you could put an app like Card Export II on your iPaq, which lets it be treated like a card reader by the host PC, by-passing ActiveSync to make a more direct access to the device's memory card(s). WM5totage is a free app that does the same but as the name says, it will work only with WM5.
The other option would be making a network connection if you have that option. That would also have the capacity to transfer large data blocks.
Thanks for your (very prompt!) thoughts. Having read further, though, I'm more convinced that the card is incompatible with my devices. It's not marked as SDHC but the general concensus seems to be that anything over 2Gb is more than likely in SDHC format.
I hope to get some time this w/e to trhash about with it a bit more.
Looks like it's incompatible. I used FlashFormat to re-format it every which way but still I get the odd folder behaviour. Oh well...looks like I need a second 2Gb card instead. My hopes of using one card with TomTom and my MP3s on are dashed.
