battery confusion?

I'm confused. How come there are three colors ( red, yellow and green ) in the battery indicators on my XDA 2s? What does each of the colors mean? Please explain.....

If they use the standard meaning, green means good battery charge level, yellow means okay but falling, red means getting low. Some charge indicators use even thirds as the break points, others break at 75% and 25% charge levels. The colors are intended as quick indictors to let you know how the battery is standing and if you need to be conscious of getting hooked up for a charge.

Thanks for the info, Yankeejeep. Now I'm wondering, how long can we use the battery before we need to change to new one.....

Most people get into the habit of recharging every day at a time they won't be using the device, like overnight. You can't overcharge a lithium battery, so leaving it charging at night is not an issue and you start off each morning at 100%/green. If you have heavy use, it is a good idea to carry a second battery, just in case.

What will happen if most of the time we charge the device overnight? Will it spoil the battery or the device? or is it that the battery's life span will be shorter?

There is no issue being connected to a charger for long periods with a lithium battery. There is a micro-circuit that prevents overcharging. And you will not develop the battery memory effect that tended to occur with old NiCad and NiMH batteries. Just do not let a lithium battery run down to zero; that can damage it.

My device shows main battery and back-up battery. But physically I only have one battery. I am guessing the back-up battery is somehtign that is built-in - is that correct?

Recently I did not use the device for almost 2 months. Now I am trying to use it. Bothe batteries were completely dead (main and back-up), after a long charge, the back-up battery still shows 0% charge.

Any ideas?

Though some devices have a user replacable button-type backup battery, it is most common for the backup power source to be on the motherboard. In many cases, it is more like a capacitor than a battery and it is intended to only maintain the device RAM for a few minutes to allow for battery swaps. When your main battery was expended, the backup was tapped to keep your device's RAM intact until it, too, was used up. You may need to do a soft reset before any charge gets read in the backup or you may need to pop the main battery out and reinsert it.
