Hi everyone. I'm new here, and pretty much new to this whole scene I guess. The only experience I have with devices like this is an older sony clie that doesn't do many helpful operations for me.
I'm looking at the Cingular 8125, since I can get it for free, and it has wifi connection, which would be a nice feature to have. From what I've read, it is possible to get internet access for free and not need to pay for Media Net by deleting the media net connection. Is this all correct? Would I also be able to check email or use an instant messaging service (primarily AIM) with a free connection?
The only other thing that worries me is size. How bulky is this? I happen to carry my cell phone around in my pocket constantly. It seems pretty bulky, but I haven't seen it first hand. Being that I'm a teenager, I'd be running around with it, etc... I'm more worried about thickness in relation to length/width.
Is this for me? Is there a better option out there for me? The main reason I'm looking at this one is because it's cheap, and inexpensive is always good in my eyes.
Thanks in advance!
dont go for it. go for the 8525. a masterpiece, just wish it had cingular video thats the only thing thats missing...oh well..ill get a slingbox eventually.
To me, $200 for the 8525 is a lot. I don't use any of the extra services (text messaging, anything else that adds to the monthly price), I just really want the wifi access. Free is always a good price to me, who is still in high school. I'd love to have the 8525, but I don't use my cell phone enough to warrant that price tag. I don't need top of the line anything, just something to make calls and access the internet (and the occasional word document).
If this really isn't what I should be looking at, can anyone advise me on something else that is very inexpensive? As long as it has free wifi available, I'll be happy.
edit: The price I can actually get it for is $50 for a refurb. The deal for the free one involves too much hassle.
Alright, so I've pretty much decided to go with it, and keep my junky old phone in case I'm going somewhere that has potential to break/damage my phone.
Just to double check, I will be able to get completely fee-free wi-fi access, correct? What exactly do I have to do? Just remove that one pre-made connection? What about for the GRPS, or whatever it's called. I don't want to accidentally start paying for something I don't want.
its easy to connect to wifi...just click at the top on the start bar where the G is (for cingulars gprs) and click turn on wifi. and yes sometimes you may be on G and not even know your using data. if you do accidentally do that you can just call cingular and they wont make you pay for it. they also told me theres no way to completely disconnect from g so you dont have to worry about it. that sucks..cuz they want you to accidentally connect and use data off the cingular networks cuz its 5 cents a kb....and the guy i talked to said hes seen bills over thousands of dollars cuz of the data usage. so if you gonna use it a lot be careful...
If I wasn't on a family plan, I might consider that option.
The whole GPRS thing makes me nervous. Is there a way to completely delete those services and just use local wifi points? Is GPRS just another connection and can it be deleted in the same fashion as Media Net? I read that you can disable data transfer to stop GPRS as well. Why can't there just be a simple phone/pda that offers free wifi without trying to get you to accidentaly use their service...
I would still be able to use Agile Messenger for example, IE and Outlook, without Media Net and GPRS, right?
i forgot to mention that i am a junior in high school.. and through my experience with this phone.. it is bulky in it's pros and cons; i just have it on my belt with the case it came with
sometimes i wish i had a blackjack just because of it's model.. but it doesn't have wifi
I'm now debating between this phone and the LG CU500. I'm really not sure if I want something as big as the 8125, but the amount of features and available are really nice.
The only pluses to the CU500 in my eyes are that it's very slim, and it also has customizable ringtones, but very limited in size.
The 8125 is my preference right now, due to the features. I'll let you all know which one I get in the end. Either way, Cingular does have a 30 day guarantee, so I'm not worried about it at all.
the 30 day guarantee depends where you purchase the phone
if you purchase from a Cingular Corp then you have 30 days to return the phone.. but you have 14 days to make changes with your contract, and have only first 3 days of activation if you want to cancel everything
i think this is right? someone correct me
..but if you purchase from a Authorize Dealer.. they might have some other return policy for phones; store credit, exchange, etc. or something
make sure you don't forget, because you dont want to regret anything
Well my phone plan won't be changed or anything, it would just be a matter of deciding whether or not it was the phone I wanted. It's just that I'm at the 2 year mark, and I can get a new phone now with their discount.
Right now I have a feeling that if I do get the 8125, I'll be keeping it.
Is the free phone thing you where looking at from amazon? If so, you are forced to sign up for 6 month of the the $40/month data plan. If you cancel the data service during the 6 months, your credit card gets charged $250 because you broke the deal. If you go through cingular, you have to sign up for one month of the $40 plan to get the rebates.
The deal that I believe offspring is talking about is an online offer to current cingular customers who qualify for a phone upgrade.
Offspring, my girlfriend found the same deal and went for it. After hers was delivered, I decided to go for it too. I'm in the same boat - I can't really spring for a $200 device right now, but $50 makes sense.
It is a bit bulkier than I'd like, but on this phone you're compromising pocket space for functionality. I'm totally new to this hardcore of a phone device even though I'm a big tech nerd - I guess it was just under my radar, but just looking at the software that's available for these things blows me away. Divx player... torrent client... (essentially) fully functioning MS Word and Excel... I love it.
Basically you're the only one who can decide whether or not it's too big and bulky for YOU. If you wear tight jeans all the time - maybe better to look elsewhere. Personally I could never bring myself to wear a belt clip - but when I'm not wearing a suitcoat, I've got on baggy jeans, so I'm taken care of.
By the way if you do decide to go for the 8125, you'll want a miniSD to hold all your stuff. Newegg has 2GB Corsair cards for $16, or about $22 after shipping. Here's a link.
Yes, I would be getting the one throught cingular.com for $50 since it is that time to upgrade my phone.
I wouldn't say I wear tight jeans, but they aren't extremely baggy either. I don't think that will be much of an issue. I've been able to stick a PSP in my pocket comfortably, so this should be no problem at all now that I think about it. In fact, the phone I have now is actually annoying me, since it's small enough to rotate around in my pocket and lay sideways, so I end up constantly turning it back around. A bigger phone should fix this problem.
Thanks for the tip on the memory card, but I think I may have a cheaper resource. I do like newegg.

As it happens, I've got a PSP right here. The 8125 has almost EXACTLY the same dimensions the PSP screen (and same thickness as the PSP itself)

Although it's not a big difference in price (around $3), newegg has cheaper 2 gb cards (Patriot, Transcend, etc..), and amazon has one that is about $19 after shipping (Transcend). I'll probably buy from newegg, however, since they are very trustworthy, and have extremely fast shipping.
ive been looking for a 2 gb for my 8525...so will those brands work for it. im not paying 100 bucks at cingular for the 2 gb i saw on ebay they run for about 30-40 but if i can get something in the 20 range thatd be sweet. thanks
I actually did not see that deal on cingular until yesterday, and I did that deal today. The thing that sucks is the price went from 50 yesterday to 80 today, oh well.
The 8525 does use miniSD.
As for the size, I am just gunna use the belt clip case for it and see how that works out.
I would get the 8525, but the gap in price is just too big. The cheapest I can find it for at the time is $350, however I have seen it with rebates for $200.
It seems that the 8125 and the 8525 are pretty much the only phones that have wi-fi available. The touch screen interface is also a nice feature.
Although I'm content with the choice of the 8125, does anyone know of any other cingular phones that have wi-fi, and maybe even touchscreen interface as well?
