cingular WiFi connect?

hey guys! noobe i shall say the least here. so i have been searching like crazy on your forums but cant get a straight answer out of what my results come back as. so please dont be harsh... i am looking to get the cingular 8525 for the main reason of the wifi and the high props i have read from your site and outhers. the problem is i havn't seemed to find a answer on why is cingular telling me i need to have a data plan or a "wifi connect" to access the internet that is being "brodcasted" to us for free in some cases. is there a way around this wifi connect fee??? i am looking to get the 8525 for the main reason of the ppc capabilites of wifi and the power it has via email emulators ect. i am a young adult looking for a flashy celly too but is this right for them to charge me to access what is being brodcasted? i graduate in feburary and then planing on enlisting in the navy in march and would like to access the web via wifi when able with out the data plan bs, to catch up on emails, myspace when i can. i can take my laptop to the local ihop and hop on their wifi for free why should i have to pay $60to use the internet whenever i want and then use wifi when it is convenit for them? sorry to rant but seems little like their being stingy to me? am i missing something on this forum that isn't being picked up on my search keywords?? thanks for your imput! great forum and sight by the way... dont think i will be leaveing any time soon what ever may happen .

Hi, i purchased the 8525 and I am very happy with it. Yes I bought a data line from Cingular, the wifi is just at specific location, data line you can connect and be on the internet anywhere, anytime, anyplace because it uses similar connect as the cell phone do which is the cell towers. HOpe this does not confuse you. Buy the data line, you will be happier, you can connect anywhere. get the unlimited dataline

hey welcome,
I have a 8125 from cingular. I also have a data plan which is 19.99 for unlimited internet. I dont belive you "need" a data plan with the 8525 as far as i know, but if you get 3g service around where you live its amazing. Think of it as wifi that you can get anywhere basically. But i dont think they are allowed to sell the devices without a data plan attached to the sale or contract. But if you get one, lets say off ebay and pop in you old sim card or go get a new 3g card ( i think there like 25.00) you wouldnt have to add a data plan that way, just make sure your using wifi all the time or you could rack up some serious data charges. My .02 says just add the 19.99 media max ( i think thats what its call) plan and you will be fine, and wont have to worry about data at all, or trying to find a wifi hotspot either. Good Luck

p.s. Dont let them tell you have to get the 39.99 pda connect plan either. Thats BS i have had this 19.99 plan for both my 8125 and my nokia e61 and have never been charged extra for anything. I also connect my phone to my laptop via bluetooth and can surf the internet that way also. Plus with the 19.99 plan you get 200 txt messages also and the 39.99 is just data for the pda connect plan.

i figured it out!!!

ok thanks for the imput people cleared a few things up. guess i was getting a little ticked off at the cingular "representive" and their activation tech person that was saying that i would have to pay a fee to access wifi. and i keep repeating my self saying i wasn't planning on useing the cell towers to access the net i want to use my wifi at my work, school, house or just drive around and pick one up somewhere driveing around. but i did a little bit of digging and what i have come up with is the "wifi connect" servise is for accessing THEIR wifi hot spots. Correct me if i am wrong but that is what i have figured out. Also was wanting to pick your guy's brians on how quick data plans work out. i see they have 5MB 10MB 20MB and unlimited. with text messageing you can figure out how much you are useing rather quickly but how quick can you use up 5 mb by surfing the net? their are picturs that are bigger than that some times and i mean hell that is just a pic... just sounds like to me you can use up all 20 megs in like 3 web pages.. maybe a little bit of a exaggration but i cant seem to figure it out. thanks guys for the imput!

the best data plan for the money is the 19.99 one with the unlimited data and 200 txt messages IMHO. Basically dont listen to what they say about "their" services. they are just trying to sell you the service. surfing the net 5mb of data would go really quick so that why its just safer to go with the 19.99 plan thats unlimited. Like i said before i suggest getting the data plan b/c you never have to worry about finding a wifi spot to get access and you wont have any supprise data charges that may incur from surfing the net. People that get those 5,10,and 20mb plan are basically checking e-mail and thats about it for the month. so get your phone and add the 19.99 media plan and you will be fine or don't add the 19.99 media plan and use wifi all the time and you will still be fine either way.

Seriously...ignore the Cingular rep. One of my best friends is a Cingular rep and her and I got into an argument that you CAN NOT use the wifi without a plan. I explained to her that i DELETED the cingular internet option on my phone and still connected to wifi. She swore to me I was going to get charged. After i proved to her I was right she later wound up calling me to explain to her and her co-worker (a cingular rep also) how it works and how to set it up. Cingular, as with all of these other cell places, believes in selling lies to make a buck. They know that if they didn't make it sound as if you NEED the plan that they would not sell them.

Now I would recomend ,if you have not done so yet, checking on insurance for it. Last I was told, Cingular DOES NOT offer insurance for PDA's. How considerate of them, huh?

If I am understanding you correctly, dont buy the wifi pkg, all i have now is the data connection package and i get connected where ever. Please elaborate. I am having a problem now trying to sync. I have uninstalled sync and installed sync and my 8525 will not sync, what the hell is wrong with this thing today

Yeah and it is awfully shi____ty that Cingular does not offer insurance on the 8525. any suggestions besides homeowner insurance.

I'm not saying DON'T buy the package. I say base ur decision on your needs. As for me, I'm not too worried about always being able to get on the internet at any given moment so just using the WiFi is perfect for me. These days there are computers everywhere so the internet is never really too far. As far as insurance...they recomended home owners insurance also. Jerks!
