On to your questions...
1) To keep the landscape mode permanent, see this thread for a workaround. They talk about opening the camera app to switch to landscape, then killing the camera app which leaves landscape mode on...not a perfect solution, but a workaround: thread at xda-dev
2) For backups, I've been using SPB backup for the past month or so, and it works great. I've run a restore from one of the self-executing backup files and have had no problems.
3) Speakerphone - from all the specs I've seen on the 8525, they mention having a speakerphone. I can't comment definitively as I do not have the device, but have you tried opening the phone app, then hitting the right softkey? That's the way I access the speakerphone function on my phone.

DAWG!
#3, Perfect. The Menu is active for Speakerphone when IN a call. Then, it toggles On/Off with the Right SoftKey. The Left side ThumbWheel adjusts volume. Thank you.
#2, Purchased SPB Backup last nite. A 2g micro SD should arrive Wed.
#1, Looks like a work around. Soon as I figure out what to to with the VJoK Butt CAB, I'll give it a whirl. So far program installation beyond ActiveSynch is cleverly hidden in most of the Ops Mannual docs.
BrainC,
The Landscape w/a seems to be defeated by the 8525.
Perhaps another user with mor PPC experience than I will find something for this machine.
Actually, what would be very cool is simply mapping one of the 4 keys to a pure Landscape/Portrait toggle, #3 is my preference. I used it for the VjoK BUTT close function. It worked, but the Portrait mode was right back for "Today" screen.
