I am sitting on a $299 credit with Cingular. I utilize both phone and email quite a bit, travel within the States and in the UK 6-8 weeks per year and need to communicate. I used a Vodaphone SIM in my Motorola 551 and do not desire to continue this method. So.....for email, phone and internet, any suggestions. I do perfer one handed mobility as I do far too much while driving. 3g will not help me much at home, but for travel, yes. to wi-fi on not to wi-fi?
Since Microsoft brought out email sync with Exchange 2003 I have been trialing various devices with the aim of removing our Blackberry Exchange Server (BES). I have purchased several form factor WM5 devices and a couple of the new Blackberrys. Now I link my PPC but I am not a true road warrior. The guys who have been testing them in the real world for me have come back with some interesting comments.
Firstly, if it doesn't have a "real" keyboard it is dead in the water.
The QTEK 9100's slide out keyboard was said to be good but definitely a two handed device. Phone quality was excellent though.
We have had a couple of Hw6945's. They like these but say the phone quality is less than the Qtek's
Then we have blackberry. Sorry to say but the old thumb scroll is a killer design. The newer faster better screens have received the best reception. Also with the new 3G model which has been connected as a gloryfied "ADSL" speed modem on the road they love it, and trust me I am not biased toward BB's as I am the one who wants to get rid of the server so I have less to manage. This is all IMHO of course!

Thanks IainO for your IMHO! I appreciate your time. What BB model are you utilizing and do you know why I must have a full keyboard to function? The Cingular 8525, sister to the HTC TYTN is coming out today, has the full keyboard, 3g, wifi, etc. Does this fit your scenario as a possibility outside of choosing a BB? I prefer voice dial and BB does not have that feature, that I know of. Then I do not have to be too concerned with one handed useage.
Can you just clarify what you need to get out of the device you buy? You talk about voice dial, blackberry's are an ok phone but they were designed from the ground up as email and PIM devices. Just list what you are after and from the experience I have and from the feedback I get from users I will offer my advice. The 8525 as far as I am am aware (haven't looked at the specs to closely) is the upgrade from the Qtek 9100 with 3G. Now the feedback I got from that (9100) was that nice little device, keyboard is ok but has to be used two handed and using the phone with the soft keys is tricky unless you have very small fingers, so unless you setup your voicedials you would have problems using it on the move. Go find one in a shop and just try and navigate one handed, it just doesn't work very well.
PS BB we have is a couple of 8707v's on loan from vodafone and I am just about to get a Nokia E61 to trial so I will let you know about that one as well.

Just wanted to add a note. I have just read a brief review of the 8525 and it has a trackwheel on the side much like the BB's. I don't know what functions this supports but if it can be used for scrolling contacts and selecting to call or email it sounds a good move in the right direction. Maybe an early adopter can give us a review of it's functionality?

Thanks again for your assistance. I need the device to be a good quality phone, able to sync with three email sources (addresses I have), open and view word and excel documents (editing could wait till at laptop), voice dial, like to have camera (for those special UK moments), international capabilities for email and instant message, bluetooth, hopefully wifi and probably a tethered modem for my laptop.
I have looked at the BB 7130 and figured I would end up with having two phones to match all I would want. I thought about a PC Card for the laptop instead of tethering, but that adds cost and another line. The Cingular 8125 I passed on due to horror stories and having to use two handed, but for answering emails, good option, but instant messaging....not on the go. I thought the Palm Treo 750 would be a good option, though not sure wifi will be avaialble in the States and it is not released yet. I will look at 8525 today ( a bit pricey.)
Simply, I need to be available on the go, phone and email 9read and respond to reports) with many offices, with some soon to be in the UK and other countries.
Killer machine.
Never thought I'd go over to the DarkSide (winMob) from Palm.
BUT, this dawg hunts ah warp 8.
Cingular give $100 if you switch from another carrier and port your #.
Ameliorates the $399 buy-in n 2 year contract.
It works 50 countries (quad band GSM) and does as well or BETTER in Colorado's High Country as my Kyocera 7135 (telescoping antenna) of Verizon did. . . and at LEAST 12x faster.
Thanks for your report. The 8525 certainly has "everything." How does it handle one handed with the scroll wheel, specifically for address book and is it possible for one handed text messaging? My local cingular does not have one in stock to take a "feel" of. Please keep me posted on any glitches. I am leaning towards the 8525 since Cingular has the 30 return policy. What are your primary purposes for the 8525?
One-handed is a bonafide Q.
I had the first Kyocera 7135 in Colorado almost 4 years ago. Tricked it way, way up to do movies and blew-up many with overdiriving chip POS extentions (Afterburner? GREAT!). Finally, VZW gave up on the device near 2 years ago. I LOVED it for one-handed use (bought Finger dial, a slicker'n grease app!). Busted about 25 of 'em and VZW HAD to let me back in with E911 compliant eBay 7135's. They fold like cheap tents when threatened with access lawsuits!
I ski Europe and a CDMA phone is useless as handles on a basketball, so I waited for the 8525 quad band, WIFI, B-tooth, 400mhz "bigger, better, faster, louder. . ." SmartPhone WITH WIFI.
It's out-of-box finger dial is okey-dokey, but I will find an after market that better suits me (I really, really prefer Landscape mode) 'cuz it's 240x320. . . very cool web browsing, BTW.
One-handed op is high on my priority list 'cuz, I drive a wicked 6 speed manual tranny. . . with but one leg. Systems functional analysis leads to need for VERY convenient one handed phone thingy. . . SeeWhatsBeinSaidHere?
Anyways, this is today's HotTicket and I got #1 in Colorado. Two gig micro-SD arrives Tuesday. I think it is a great replacement for the Kyocera 7135. . . . great bargain on eBay tomorrow <grn>
Good luck with Cingular.
I negotiate from the strength of my billings.
They cave rather easily.
You SHOULD make this deal, IMNHO.
Hey Pegleg.
Understand your one handed needs.............If you find after market finger dial, let me know. Saw the threads on permenant landscape mode, might give that a try once I have negotiated with Cingular and get mine. I really need one handed texting. How good is the voice command? 2 gig card, from where?
6 speed tranny....Colorado mountain roads....400mhz communication...roll on!
Coastlanders,
So far, the Lanscape bug is un-work-around-able. Tried VJoK BUTT, (but) no joy. BTW, getting the straight, simple steps to install .CAB was no mean feat. YIKES! Even simple stuff is difficult here on the "DarkSide" <grn> Oh, well, this machine is becoming more intuitive by the hour.
Brain C was correct re: Speakerphone. When IN a call, right SoftKey triggers menu with SpkrFone toggle on/off. Sound quality and mike pickup is adequate for use as a stand alone car kit (PersOp: "Foks with in ear B/T gizmos look stupid!). The $5 (car wash junk rack) dash mounted squeeze holder for the Kyocera fits the 8525 perfectly. Lucky is always better that smart!
Haven't tried voice activation yet. Liked it on the Kyocera and see someVoice apps adv here and at Cingular forum.
Two g micro SD came off eBay from oh_buiness in Plano, TX. $76 plus $8 mail, he mailed it yesterday.
The 7135 was bogged way, way down in my huge Contct DB. The 8525 is wicked fast gettingContacts, tel #s, etc. Think you will like it.

Coastlanders,
It is well to remember: "Be careful what you wish for."
Sometimes, us dumber'n a box of rox users instinctively know what "ought to be."
Sure enough, re exploring "Buttons" tured up an option to map 1 of the 4 for <Rotate Screen>.
VOILA!
Landscape Mode now instantaneous using Button #3!
Perfect.
Re: Speakerphone, when "in call," the Left Soft Key gives access to a set of onscreen controls for Speakerphone, Mute, Hold, etc.
Very nice for 1 hand op.
All in all, the 8525 has kicked my butt for a couple days. But, I'm LIKING it more each day as I get better acquainted with the WinMob design spec.
So, from The High Country, a SOLID "Buy It."
Best,
I am an owner of the 8125, but have already ordered the 8525 and it is on the way to my house! i can't wait!!
I have only had my 8125 for about a week now and i love it. Big step up from the LG-pm325 (sprint) phone. The VoiceSpeedDial works awesome on the 8125, i have been very impressed. I also cant wait to see how much faster the 8525 will be. I can't imagine it being much faster, the 8125 already seems very quick. I also will be ordering a 2GB mSD card. I will need it for the tomtom maps. (anyone know of any other apps like tomtom that are cheeper or free?)
I am using Spb Pocket Plus application - very nice to get a quick view of apps and utilities on my phone. Since i am a mac user i also am using the missing sync to sync my contacts, calendars, etc. to my phone.

SharkD,
Grab aholt something solid.
Then, activate the 8525.
Then, hang on fer yer life!
The dang thing's fastern' a speeding bullet.
Abele to leap tall buil. . . um, not QUITE that fast, but impressively quick.
Took me about 4 days to subdue and find most bugs in WinMob.
It's MicroShaft, so what's to expect???
But, the underlying spec is, I think, sound.
I'm jonesin' for a Video projector interface in the Hardware thread.
Found some options, but the folks in this forum are a heap smarter'n me.
I'm just hitchin' along gettin' a truck load of ignorance fixed.
Pegleg,
WHEW! Mine arrived Friday and am enjoying every moment. What a learning curve and still not done. Camera, great; syncing, fantastic; typing...a whiz; speed, speed, speed! My signal not as strong as previous Cingular...not sure what that is about. Battery holding okay so far. Keep playing guys and pass along info.
Blessings,
Coastlanders

HooooooRoooo!
Good on ya!
Me, being a glacially slow learner, you already know more about the 8525 than I suspect. . . <grn>
Still waiting on the 2g Micro SD.
Found screen protectors (enroute) and for $14.99 a car charger, wall charger AND 1350mah battery . . . all new in box. Confirmed they are enroute.
Since you like "speed, speed, speed" take a peek. Meet Noliyo There are links in his yarn.
Hey Pegleg:
For $14.99....where. Been looking at screen protectors. I get free car charger from HTC with coupon, but that alone for battery...you have done some searching. Now for the proper case!! I LOVE THIS SCREEN!
Learning on this puppy will take a team effort. My IT guys will love playing with it.

CL,
The 2g SD Micro came from oh_business, Plano, TX. Found it on eBay Express for $79.99 + $6.99 USPS + $2.30 insurance. It arrived POB late today, might get it tomorrow.
Searched eBay for "8525 battery" and found Battery + Home Charger + Car Charger for $14.99, $5.95 ship. It is on a slow boat from Calif; probably next week. In same mix (I think) found screen protectors from iGone Mobile. Ordered Monday, not here yet.
Five bucks per month, they sell with 1st month free.
There is a reason it's free!
It does NOT export from Outlook 2003, only Outlook 2000!!!!!
Imagine that??!!
So, I chatted the Cing techie lady.
She's no help.
Got to the Product Dev guy earlier (before learning that Voice Dial is busted) and learned he wrote some of the VD code for AT&T. He gave me his 800 #, so I'll call him Monday re: Outlook 2003 .csv interface.
Hopefully I can get the .csv spec for FieldNames and Order(if Dumb or Dumber wrote the code). Then, I might have a useful fix via Outlook to Xcel to .csv to VoiceDial import.
Any idea as to how and if the PPT button can be reprogrammed for speed voice dial so I do not have to utilize screen?
Havin a blast,
Coast
CoastDawg,
If by PPT, you mean PushToTalk (2007 implementation?), I think that would be VERY useful as there is a dearth of programmable buttons (only 4) on the device now. No, I've no idea other than a firmware upgrade by HTC(?).
Both chargers and the 1350mah battery arrived Sturday. Opened box today, exactly as advertised for $14.99. The 2g Micro SD is at Post Office for Monday pickup. . . then, I'll jones up some of the trick software.
FYI on remapping Push To Talk (PPT) for voice from Mobile Tech Review
The phone offers voice commands and voice dialing though this isn't true speech recognition; you'll need to record voice tags. The software is Cyberon's Voice Speed Dial which we like nonetheless and it's made prior appearances on E-TEN and ASUS Pocket PC phones as well as the Cingular 8125. The software is very good at recognizing recorded voice tags, doesn't make dangerous guesses like certain otherwise beloved Nokia S60 3rd Edition smartphones (our Nokia N80 and E70 have a nasty habit of picking and dialing international contacts from our address books when they couldn't understand us). It also works with Bluetooth headsets and car kits, unlike Microsoft Voice Command which does true speech recognition. On the TyTn, you need only press the voice speed dial button on the phone's left side to initiate voice dialing and commands. Sadly, the Cingular 8525 re-purposes this button as the Push to Talk button; a feature that isn't even yet implemented on the 8525. That button isn't remappable using the Buttons settings applet, but Sleuth255 on XDA Developer's web site has developed a small app that allows you to re-map it to the voice dialer (or another application if you prefer) .
did you say you were from NC? I am from the Fayetteville, NC area btw....
I got my 8525 today!! whoohooo!!! I really like it. I still have me 8125 and am making the transition over to the 8525. I also was dissapointed to loose the Voice button that the 8125 had, why they would remove that i have no idea. I re-programed the "button 3" to activate the voice application, since the buton 3 is used for comm manager, that is less commonly used by myself, and was easier than trying to re-program the PTT button.
Does anyone have any idea an easier way to "migrate" data from my 8125 to my 8525?? I am having a really difficult time getting my 8525 to sync up with my MacBook. I do have a Toshiba-Satellite laptop but all of my contacts and calendars are on my MacBook.
I was using an app called "the missing sync" and it worked great with 8125 but not so great with the 8525.....
I am going to uplaod some photos of the two phones side by side soon just so everyone can see the slight physical differences. Since I have only had my 8125 for about a week or so, the switch to the 8525 should be easy.
I have rambled on enough for now.......
Edit: I just went to "Settings/USB to PC" and enabled advanced network functionality. This seems to make the sync function work now on my Windows PC.... now to try it again on my MacBook... I will post again on my progress.

Coast,
If you get that PTTFix.zip, e-mail it to Cing8525@trfproperties.com
That forum is snarly like my black Chow-chow and won't give it to me.
The PTTfix worked. I will deal with the PTT later when it is available....if I want to pay. For now I am grateful to have the voice dial button since I like one handed functionality. Anybody know of a good 8525 "glove" case for easier grip? This things a might slippery.
Still havin a blast,

Hey Sharkdrive, I am over here in the Brushy Mtn. area.

BrushyMtnDawg,
Yo, hero, THX for the PTT Fix.
Yer the best!
What I woulda built . . . a TWO function, ONE key hack!
NICE!
Sleuth255, we owe ya!
Micro SD 2g installed okey dokey tonight.
Runs like a hose!
Just put GMP Soft's King James Version on it and nearly 2 g of Chuck Missler lectures, some John Fogerty and a bunch of ski race videos plus some I made for Real Estate over last 4 years on the Kyocera 7135 (33mhz) when NOBODY could make listing movies and play them ON their phone. "What else y'all reckon they can't do?" Haw, haw, haw
Pretty dang simple, now.
Gotta LUV the technology.
One thing, though.
Cingular forgot DuctTape.
DT fixes EVERYTHING worth having, so it now secures the "prone to get lost" SD Micro. What boneheads to leave the door/flap off the design for a few cents/dollars?!!? Grrrrrrr
Yet, put an inop PTT button on it.
Makes a man's brain ache . . .
But, FAST makes lots of sins engineering forgiven, no?
This is gettin' funner every day!
Hello all... I just ordered the 8525... Can't wait!!! I'm coming out of a RIM8700 and Samsung 730I. Reading the reviews on the 8525 had me sold.
What is everyone's experience in regards to GPS Navigation for the Pocket PC?
Subzero,
I have no GPS experience with the PPC platform.
I have a GPS unit in an awd magnum that has some of the most intuitive software I've ever seen/used. It is phenomenal and, as a Realtor, I've come to depend on it . . . plus, for clients, High WOW factor.
The 8525 ought to RIP the GPS app.
I have had one for 11 days and after the arrival of the SDmicro, began 3rd party software loading tonight.
Trust this, pard, THIS THING RIPS!
You will love it.
Let us know about the GPS app.
Usually, I'm lost like a goat in a snowstorm . . .
Thanks for the reply PP... i'll wait to get some feedback in regards to GPS apps to see what everyones experience is before I start installing apps that don't work well...
