Unhappy iPaq H3765 won't sync and won't hard reset - Please help?

Hi, all. Since I don't much go for fluff posts, I'll make my first one with some meat on it.

Anyway, I bought a used iPaq H3765 a couple of weeks ago, figuring, "Hey, cool! $100 handheld, and it'll be a vast improvement over the Visor Prism I've been using since 2002!" And I was right, but I've got a little problem. I can't sync to a PC via USB, though it will charge via the USB port. I bought a seperate charger/sync cable for it, since the cradle was looking rather rough, and though that does charge it just fine, it either shows up as an unknown device or (more often) flat out doesn't show up, when I try to connect it to my PC.

It also has another problem, which I assume is related, since the part in question is right next to the sync port. In the manual I downloaded for it, it said that, to do a hard reset, one should flip the little power switch next to the sync connector to the off position to disconnect the battery, leave it there for a minute or until it flicks off, then switch it back on and push the power button. Well, that little switch does nothing, on mine. I've toggled it at one to two minute intervals several times, and yet the thing is still on, and still frozen from a software crash earlier. Hence why I'm posting this; got interrupted in what I was doing, and am waiting for the battery to fully discharge.

Anyway, yeah. My iPaq is a bit hosed, and I need some help figuring out how to make it unbroke, since I do like it. Anybody have any good ideas on what the problem here is, and/or how to solve it without having to pay HP more than I paid to buy it to fix it?

There was a known problem with this model and syncing. See this article, you might have the same issue regarding the switchboard assembly.
