New to PPC Addicts, but I am a long time PPC user.
I recently purchased a Cingular 8125.
I've found that I've had to perform soft resets very regularly, several times a day,.
I was hoping that someone could possibly shed some light on possible configuration changes, etc. I've searched the forum but haven't found anyone with this particular problem.
Most of the time this happens when the device has been turned off for a while. Typically, I have it locked from the today screen before putting it in the case. (I was always calling the last number dialed while in the case.)
I have the Cingular Xpress Mail running along with 2 other POP3 mailboxes.
Other than that pretty standard apps. I've tried to eliminate any background apps from running off of the storage card. Agile Messenger is installed on the storage card, but not used on the today screen.
I do utilize the device as a BlueTooth tethered modem from a Powerbook, but that does not seem to tie into the system hanging.
You might want to check first some of your application arunning in the background, you can do this by checking the memory setting, usually some applications do this, when left running at background and the device turn to standby mode, it wont let you revive again without doing any soft reset.
Let us know how it goes...

One thing I found that really bogs down the 8125 is if you have your attachment download size set too high. For one, make sure all your attachments are downloading to the memory card rather than your device but more importantly make sure the size is set to a reasonable size. obviously you can manually download any file you want that may be larger but I have big slow down and reset problems when I had my download size too high.
This may not be the solution but it's worth a shot.
Well, I'm still experimenting. Not ready to try a hard reset just yet.
I've tried stopping all background tasks before turning the device off or letting it sleep. I've also stopped some background services using memmaid.
Regading downloads, I don't automatically download any attachments.
My next step may be to try uninstalling Xpress mail by Cingular. I'm just suspicious with the push technology.
Next might be a reset and an orderly re-install of additional applications.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Keep them coming, please.
I remember this used to happen all the time with my Cingular 8125, but then I quit using WiFi and installed all my programs to a storage card.
The current rom does have a problem with WiFi and it causes it to freeze after calls. This is due to the 8125 always automatically trying to reconnect to gprs first after a phone call then trying WiFi. I know it doesn't sound like it should be a problem, but several users I've talked to have had this problem and after alot of troubleshooting I concluded this was it. Cingular has a thread about this on there support forums also.
The storage card helps with programs because it give it more memory to run on. When I had some programs on the phone itself I noticed severe slowess and random lock ups, but once the storage card was put to use that all went away.
Wireless Data Plan X dollars.
Wirless PDA Y dollars.
24 hours without a forced reset .... priceless.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
Well, through trial and error I was able to consistently cause the 8125 to freeze. The sequence of events are the following.
- Unplug the device
- Lock the device
- Wait for the device to turn off.
- Send myself a high priority email to my desktop which cause a text message to be sent to the device through the Cingular Xpress Mail client.
- The device wakes up to display the alert.
- Allow the device to turn off again.
- Try to power on the device.
- Reset required.
I repeated the same tests without locking the device an it worked consistently with out requiring the reset.
Leaving the device unlocked is not an option due to the phone buttons initiating calls when in the case, pocket or brief case when an alert is recieved.
I download Pocket Secure as a solution to allow me to lock the device.
Once configured, I repeated the tests above and everything still works fine.
If I run into any further issue, I'll post back to this topic.
Thanks again,
Frank
