I'm a new forum member that is looking into moving from a NEC MobilePro 790 handheld pc to a PPC. I'll be using this unit for (1) pda, (2) checking email anytime I'm away from home, (3) note taking in my college classes, so I will need to be able to use an external full size keyboard, (4) recreation (music, video's, ebooks), (5)possibly use as GPS.
I think I will want a PPC that is bluetooth enabled to allow me to connect to my cell phone if I don't get a converged unit. A camera isn't a deal breaker either way, although I suppose if it was decent it wouldn't be a bad thing. I would also like the unit to be useable all day long so battery life is important. What PPC and accessories am I looking for? I myself can't answer that question yet, as I am just starting my search, so all input is welcome. This forum is my starting point in my search.
edited to add- Also I think a VGA screen would be very nice.
You have a lot of requests, but all that can be covered by a Pocket PC! It sounds like you'd want either a Dell Axim x51v or a Cingular 8125. Both of these Pocket PCs run Windows Mobile 5.0 and have WiFi, however, the x51v has VGA resolution and the 8125 has the built in cell phone.
You can check e-mail through both, but the 8125 will give you more flexability since you don't have to tether with another phone and you don't have to be a a WiFi hotspot. You can connect and Bluetooth keyboard, either portable or full size to these devices as they are both Bluetooth capable and you can watch videos and music as well as read eBooks on both. Both will also run GPS via Bluetooth as well.
The Cingular 8125 includes a decent camera where as the x51v does not have this option. Both have respectible battery lives, but the x51v definitely takes more power because of the large VGA screen. I'd recommend getting extended batteries anyway. Also I'm sure our in house BoxWave representative will recommend some accessories for these Pocket PCs such as screen protectors, stylii, retractable cables and cases. You can also find a Bluetooth GPS adapter with software for about $150-200 bucks.
The reason question is, do you want VGA and no phone? Or No VGA with phone? It's about time they make a VGA phone edition device but I understand that battery life wouldn't be good because the device needs juice for both the display and the cell phone...
Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.
