I bought an O2 Atom last week at a local store, and was very pleased with the purchase. The next day, I noticed that the phone was making a strange buzzing noise from the screen, and when I put the device to my ear there was a very high pitch whine coming from the unit. The sound is a lot like what one would hear standing behind an old CRT television.
I took that Atom back to the store, and they kindly gave me a new one. The very next day it started making the same high pitched noise out of the ear speaker, and the buzzing from the screen area.
The only thing I can think of is that perhaps somehow the charger and/or battery are bad, or otherwise providing too much power to the unit. They did not replace them, they only swapped the phones. The only other constant is the SIM card, and a Kingston miniSD but I would think it would be logical to suspect the charger first.
I was curious if this was a known and/or common problem with the Atom? I am wondering if it is somehow something I did to the unit but I don't see how. I didn't get it wet, and I never dropped or otherwise abused either one of them. I just don't think its a coincidence that two of them have died in my hands, both only after they went on the charger...
I don't want to go back and ask for a third phone, but I am not happy with the situation as it sits as this isn't an inexpensive item we're talking about here!
have you been to the 02 asia web site yet? Theres a patch for the Atom headset? This patch limits the headset volume to a certain sound pressure level. Released on 17 May 2006.
I purchased an Atom in Sydney last week and two days later the same thing, noise when the screen is on.
I took it back to the store the next day and I'm currently waiting for a replacement.
The interesting thing here is that I also have a Kingston mini SD and the noise only started after this was used. However, I've taken it out and it still has a the same problem.
I'll try removing it and then doing a full reboot and see what happens.
Does anyone know if an SD card could be causing this?
That's interesting, I was thinking it was more likely to be a problem with the charger in my case since it killed two Atoms but the mini sd could definately be the culprit. I know of plenty of people using Kingston miniSD in atoms, so it is more likely a bad individual stick if that is the case.
Was the noise coming from right behind the screen?
In the case of mine, once the damage was done it was done. No combination of battery removal, sd removal, charger/no charger, etc. would make the noise go away.
I HAD an O2 XDA Atom and returned it to Expansys for this very reason. It seems as though either the LCD screen or the digitizer (the touch screen) is not properly grounded which is why you only hear the buzz when the screen is activated. I believe that it is a manufacturing defect and from the looks of all your posts, its a common one. I don't believe that it is a miniSD issue but I could be wrong.
HTC didn't manufacturer this one...Quanta did... I understand that although the rw6828 is the same product, it is better than the O2 Atom.
OK, I have the same problem with my O2 Atom, and after my 2nd replacement, I am still getting the same problem. Both of the unit has this problem BEFORE I put any SD card or Charger in (I used my friend's charged battery).
We brought 5 atom from the same shop in Melbourne, now 2 have the 3 have the same problem, the noise level varies.
I agreed with Tim's view on this, just not sure if O2 support or MPS will share the same view. There is currently about 3 weeks wait on replacement stock in Australia, and they need to accept this is a product defect!
I am now on my second replacement from o2, for a total of my third Atom. Neither of my two original units had the buzz when I recieved them, which worries me that this problem could develop over time.
My new Atom does not buzz or have any other problems. Interesting to note - the other two faulty atoms already had the latest firmware. My new "replacement" from o2 has an older firmware, leading me to believe that recent production runs may be more likely to have the problem given my limited experience with the device.
I'm still afraid of putting my miniSD card in the phone though. I'm also a little bummed that I didn't just wait and get an Atom Exec. I wonder if they are going to have a trade-in program?
It's sad that you have to be "afraid" to put in your miniSD card into your device. O2 should know better then to distribute such a faulty unit with users having to be weary to do tasks that they could do without a hitch on other devices...
I too received my 3rd Atom (2nd one did not have the noise just wouldn't start up) last week and touch wood no problems so far.
The 1st Atom that developed the noise was also pre loaded with the 06 ROM however, the recent one with no problems has the old 05 ROM which I have since upgraded. So far so good no issues.
I've also refrained from putting my SD car in just incase this happens again.
Hi, just want to share my atom's experience. Bought the set within 2 weeks and strange buzzing sound appear on the lcd screen once it is on.
Functions is in order is just the distracting buzzing sound.
Thank god the set repaired within 3 days and been using it just for another week and that stupid sound came back.
Any clue whether the 3rd party software are damaging the set or the main processor is faulty that damage the lcd screen.
Now my set still in the service centre and in waiting list for the main processor. The service centre agreed to change my main processor but need to wait... wait... wait...wait....
Any o2 user face that similar problem and can share your experience!!!!!!!
Welcome to Pocket PC Addict Melfren! I have moved your post into this thread because others have experience the same problem as you (even me). We believe that it's not 3rd party software but a defect in the digitizer or LCD screen itself.
Looks like this is a common problem. I'm on my second o2 atom in 1 month and had to return mine for the same reason - high pitched squeal coming from the display.
Also, i have problems with my bluetooth GPS - software won't detect the device even though it works great with other earlier model XDA's in our company.
I just upgraded from the o2 mini which i was sooo happy with but gave away to one of my staff.
I just went to visit a customer who had an o2 atom as well, same problem - high pitched squeal and he also has an alarm clock that goes off every 10 minutes and can't be dismissed.
o2 should recall this product - any help with this problem would be appreciated.
I too have the issue with my Atom. About a month after I purchased it, having run without problems on the latest firmward upgrade, the speaker started buzzing and the buttons on the front of the case stopped working.
I sent it in for repairs - just under two week turnaround - they replaced the LCD module and a gasket.
Lo and behold, upon return, working buttons and a buzzing ear speaker!
I have found if I switch the screen off while I'm talking I lose the buzzing, but how annoying. I'm loathe to go without it for another two weeks if everyone else's experience is that repairs are only a temporary fix.
Okay...I don't have the system you are talking about, but I can help. That electonic buzz you speak of is caused by the high-voltage power regulator for the backlight. The sound is caused by the current passing through the converter. There is no fix for this, but it isn't a malfunction in the device.
Both of my palm's have that problem, and My Razr also does it. So I have experienced this.
I have been having those same high pitched sounds from my Atom exec as well. I am using a ScanDisk 2G Memory card but taking that out makes no difference. I also have a mate who just his about a week ago but his does not have that high pitched sound.....yet.
Same problem here in Singapore. I have exchange the faulty phone 4 times. o2 only decided to do the first exchange after many months of complaints. Anyway, the first change yielded a phone that couldn't charge. The second change gave me a phone that wouldn't wake up once it goes into sleep mode. Third change ... ahhh...back to square one, high pitch sound from LCD. The forth change ... same LCD problem.
The sound is likely caused by poor quality electronic components. My friends' dopods do not suffer from LCD buzzing. Neither do other PDAphones, like SE P900x, etc.
o2 should be penalised for putting faulty phones in the market. You shouldn't be afraid of inserting your SD cards into the phone or otherwise.
I am going to make one final complain and let's see how o2 is going to deal with these defective goods.
I am also from Singapore. I bought an O2 three weeks ago from the 2nd hand store. If only I had known all these problems, I would not even go near it. I bought a relatively new pure edition one. For my case, the screen appears to be fine so far, but I have problem with the telco network connection. The phone signal is down very often, especially when I needed it most. I had to try many times to get it connected to the network again. I wonder if this is a O2 or my sim card problem. Anyone having similar problem as me?
i'm an rw6828 user ("brother" of the atom) and to be quite honest, i have the same problem. i had my unit replaced once within the month i bought it for the same problem, but the unit they replaced it with seems to have the same defect.
does anyone know where the heck this buzzing sound is coming from???
