PocketPC Carputer!

As promised in a previous post, my parts have arrived, and I'm sharing the results with all of you. . .or more like sending you to my website, so I don't have to copy and paste everything in here. I used a Asus WL-HDD & an Axim x51v

You can go to my website to see my new Pocket PC carputer setup with videos . . . JeffersonKim.com

Very nice article - I appreciated the breakdown of the components and prices and why you chose what you did.

A few questions.

So do you need to set up an ad hoc network or something - how does the Dell automatically see the hard drive?

Is there any password capability? Could someone with a PPC or laptop nearby grab stuff off your hard drive?

Have you tried putting mapopolis maps on there too - or just music & video?

Thanks for the compliment. I'm glad it helped.

- The hard drive simply creates an "access point" like any other standard router, so the Axim should simply pick up the signal like any other wireless signal.
- There is password capability, but I'm too lazy to install it and because I only have the hard drive on when I'm on the road (and while the engine is running), I don't really worry about people being able to take my files.
- Mapopolis goes onto my 1 GB hard drive card, for the maps. Going off the hard drive would take FOREVER to download every time I started the program!

The password capability is all input like any standard router, through a GUI interface that's accessed through a web browser hard linked to your hard drive.
