In the market for storage and I was looking for a little advice. Is mostly for gaming and fun stuff, so not looking to spend a great deal. I was surfing and saw 1g SD for 25 bucks. (sandisk) That sounded a little too good to be true?
You can find good buys online, but 1G for $25 would make me a little nervous. There are defective cards and/or cheaply made fakes (which are easy to make and be sold looking pretty much like a brand name card) floating all over the place.
For a first card, I would recommend you spend a few extra dollars and purchase a card from a reliable brick and mortar store (Staples, CompUSA, etc) that has a decent return policy if there is a defect in the card.
There are, of course, reliable online merchants as well, (Buy.com, Newegg.com, etc.) but purchasing anything online can mean real hassles if you have to return it for any reason.
Right now, the average price for a 1G card is about $50 or so, occasionally less with a rebate. I bought a spare at Staples 2 weeks ago for $39.99, with a $10 mail in rebate. (Card was PNY brand, BTW)
Just having a "name brand" doesn't mean much, since the fraudsters can easily make a Sandisk label and throw it on any card.
It's really much more about the reputation of the place you purchase the card than the name on the card itself.
Good luck...I'm sure you'll find yourself a good deal out there!

Thanks for the input! The price I was referring to was actually from Buy.com, and they are associated with Amazon, so I tend to trust them.
Price was more like, 29 dollars, free shipping then a 10 dollar rebate.
(so the end price would be 20ish) Kingston.
I wouldn't be afraid of that purchase either. I just bought a 1gig micro SD transflash with an SD adapter (for my phone). cost me 48.50 shipped. Bought it from Fastmemoryman on Ebay. Won the bid on Thur night and got it in the mail monday afternoon. Works great and I've never seen a smaller card than this one.
Not only is buying a brand name a good thing, larger more reputable companies usually have better warranties on their cards as well.
I had an old SanDisk 512 MB SD card that was faulty. I totally forgot when I purchased it but I know that it was over a year old when I called it in. Regardless, they took care of it and sent me a replacement.
