My old iPaq that I gave to my daughter a couple of years ago seems to have finally given up the ghost. While part of me just wants to pitch the thing, there is a part, however, that wants to find some reason to keep the silly thing (it was my first PPC, after all ). Is there any intrinsic value in keeping it or should I simply let go and lay it to rest?
That's a hard question to ask a person who still keeps an external dial-up modem, the cheap mouse that came in 3 computers ago, and a bunch of stuff that I don't even remember what it was supposed to do in the first place in a box, "just in case."
The "real" answer is that there is no real reason to keep it, unless you want to try to take it apart yourself, and see the guts...no risk since it doesn't work anyway.
It's really up to you. You could probably send it for repairs, but they are likely to be costly, and exceed the cost of a new low end device.

I'm all for keeping "firsts." Am I the only one that has converted my attic into a "museum" for all this good stuff?
But I agree with JDTagish, if you don't have (or want to start) a "museum" then there really is no reason to hold on to it. Maybe you could have a little funeral and bury it out back. Then again... I'm the one with a "museum" full of old tech so why would you be listen to me?
It's good to know I'm not the only grognard holding onto tech from the past. Heck, I still have an old VHS-C camcorder somewhere in my closet.
I'm considering using the old iPaq as a second, small monitor hence the other post about multiple PPCs on one computer. I tried out the demo of "Side Window" (I think that's the name of the software) and thought it was pretty cool.
I appreciate the feedback, and if I ever need to join an old technology 12-Step Program, I know where to look for fellow addicts.
OOh... I'm a pack rat myself. If it were up to me, I'd dissect the sucker and turn it into an activity that you could do with your daughter. I mean, how often do you get a chance to take a device apart risk-free? 8)
