I present to you the SX66, a marvel of technology that every road warrior should at least have a chance to play with:
My first pocket pc was a Dell Axim X50v. A very impressive Pocket PC, but sadly, as some of us have had to come to terms with, I just didn't use it enough to justify paying around $500 for it. I was very pleased with nearly every feature, and was sad to sell it.
I say this, so you know where I come from, an impressive device like the X50v, into the SX66, and that is why you should sit up and take notice when I say I probably like the SX66 even more.
Here's why:
The SX66 has an impressive list of features. The connectivity alone is great. You have a quad band gsm phone, capable of travelling the world and working no matter where you go. Combine this with Infared, Bluetooth, and WiFi, and as I heard someone put it, If it's connectable, the SX66 can do it! But it's not one feature or set of features alone that made the SX66 stand out for me, it's the solid offering of so many above average features that come together and make a great device.
The slide-down keyboard is the best small input method I've seen. Realizing you're not going to type a book out on this, it's still a good input method, plenty capable of an IM conversation or two, and a few emails. Once you use it after any other input method on a phone or Pocket PC, it's a breath of fresh air.
But the thing that makes this an awesome device, even moreso than if it were a standard Pocket PC is the phone integration. The combination of GPRS and the Pocket PC platform is perfect. When you have connectivity anywhere, a whole new world opens up to you. Instant messaging, Email, and web browsing are great things to have anywhere you go. Having it in your pocket and having it be the only device in your pocket just makes it that much easier to take with you.
The 400mhz processor and 128mb ram give this PPC good performance, it will run SNES games flawlessly without sound, although with sound there's a noticable slowdown. You don't have to wait for much except boot. Pocket IE starts without any noticeable delay. Pocket word takes about 1/4 of a second to load, and nothing really takes any time to speak of. The screen is fairly bright, and there's no shortage of buttons. (9)
Battery life is good, but not great at 40% after a day of heavy phone use and gaming. It should never run out as long as you charge it every night or right after say, watching a movie.
Pros:
Incredible connectivity, anything you want, it will do
Built in keyboard
Fast
Cons:
Keyboard is good, not perfect. It would be nicer if the buttons were aligned more horizontally as opposed to curved at the edges.
Signal strength appears low, but I'm not sure how close that is to the truth. So far it's connected wherever I've asked of it, although I don't have anything to compare it to.
It looks like it's going to take some work to get mp3 and contact specific ringtones working, although wav and midi are easy to use.
Hopefully I'll be able to add more as I use it more, but after my first day using it, it's defenietly a keeper.
Also note that I'll gladly answer any questions you have about it!
