So, I figure those who are in the know are excited for this Thursday's (1/5) launch of the Palm Treo 700w. It's almost taboo for a Pocket PC Addict to say they are excited about a Palm product so I was wondering who else is excited for this release (don't worry, you won't get in trouble)?
I believe that the Treo 700w is a promising product considering how many companies are in on it (Microsoft, Palm, Verizon), but I can't help but think that the device will be fully of "issues." Either way I am always on the "bleeding edge" of technology so I'll be able to handle it. I understand however that most business users won't take it. What do you all think? And how will this really effect Palm's hold on the market (software and hardware wise)?
I'd love to hear your opinions before (and after) the official release.
I'd have to admit, I've always like the form factor of the Treo's...more condusive to holding them up to your ear to speak. This has long been my complain with other PDA phone devices.
But, in looking into this device, I've heard comments around the net from Palm users who are just POed about a Palm device running Windows Mobile. To be honest, I don't know if it will draw very many "geeks" to it.
I suspect it will be sold more to the unsuspecting public, who want something that "looks" cool, rather than die hard gadget freaks, but I could be wrong.
I do agree with you Tim, that there are likely to be "issues" with a device like this one, but I also agree, you could probably handle it.
I also think it will largely depend on how Verizon handles any potential issues that come up, and how Palm provides support in the event of an "issue." It could go like the T-Mo/HP disaster, or we could be pleasantly surprised.
I currently have Sprint, and I have to say their customer service is pretty hit and miss. I boughht my new i600 last week, and wanted to exchange it yesterday, because the headset port was finicky and the ringers were so low I could hardly hear it. They gave me a bunch of crap about having to "test" it (of course THEY said it was fine - they always do!) but I was within the 14 day return period, so I made the stupid CSR get a manager and exchanged it anyway. The new one is MUCH better, so I know it was an issue with the phone. (Shows what they know!)
Anyway, the point is, it will be all about the service and support offered to see if the device survives.
Im excited!
This thing is gonna rock! The Best OS in the Best form factor....
Im hoping(and betting) that this will be the crossover/breakout
device we expect it to be.
Tons of Sales to Geeks(from both camps, there will be more Palm jumpers than you think, the ones on the net are the most outspoken ones but dont necessarily represent the masses), tons of sales to wanna be geeks, tons of corporate sales.... Hopefully mainstream big time as well....we'll see...
I doubt there will be a ton of problems, the Treos so far have been pretty solid.... Though I guarantee a bunch of square screen complaints will be all over with everything having to be scrolled on most of the apps and non
compatibility with others. But we wrote All-In to be Square screen right away expecting the 'boom'!! And have or are working on the rest of our product line...
Release the hounds....
Man, how could I have passed up the square screen debate? Among other Pocket PCs, I carry around with me a wannabe Treo 650 also known as an iPAQ hw6500. The little device runs WM2003SE and also has a square screen display. GPS works well with the square screen but other programs don't fair well with the 240x240 resolution. With that being said there are a few developers that already had this in mind and allowed their GUIs to be compatible with any Pocket PC resolution (even before the thought of a square display). I'm sure that when (and if) the Treo 700w catches on, more and more software developers will make their programs compatible for multiple resolutions. As for the developers who have though one step ahead... more power to you.
Only one more day until the Treo 700w release...

I have to respond to the comment "I doubt there will be a ton of problems, the Treos so far have been pretty solid...."
Have you ever used a treo? We bought 8 of them for some of our staff last year. While not a total nightmare, it took awhile for them to grow on the end user. A few had to be sent back for replacements due to excessive re-booting.
Most users had accepted the "quirkiness" of their devices as long as they can get their email and make calls 90% of the time. Myself, I can tolerate the occasional freeze up because the pros outweigh the cons.
That being said, it should be obvious to all of us that the 700w is a "1.0" product at this point. Early adopters will suffer the typical and as-to-be-expected growing pains of such a release.
Also consider that the Treo 650 was a vast improvement over the 600. I would assume the 750w will also be an obvious improvement.
Good luck all you early adopters! I'd be interested in seeing some real world feedback in these forums.

Amen to that post. I too have experienced a Treo 650 for a few weeks and I must say it is anything but solid. I've had many people complain about how unstable the Treo 650 can be. Now that's not to say that a Pocket PC Phone Edition device is any better, it's just that I've been hearing way too much credit for the Treo 650 where credit is not due. Sure the device is simple, easy to use and gets the job done, but like most PDAs with integrated phones, it tends to have issues.
I will be getting my hands on a Treo 700w *very* soon and will be creating a forum topic just for questions! Get those questions ready and stay tuned!
