I think someone has spiked the eggnog over at About.com today. I did a double take on the date of the article to make sure it wasn't dated Dec. 21, 2003 because William Hungerford says the Axim X5 is the "PDA of the Day" today!
Does Dell even sell those anymore? I had trouble ordering an X50 just last month for a client of mine, so I believe the X5s went away sometime in 2003.

The only thing I see are "like new" and "refurbished" ones. Good going about.com!
Actually the eggnog was quite good
The post was to point out an extremely cheap Pocket PC option through Pricegrabber. Even though the X5 is an older model, it's a great starter PDA that can be found pretty cheap which makes a great deal when you only have a few bucks left over from shopping.
When I posted the blog entry, there were actually new models lsited but you're right only used and refurbished are up now but that always changes.
So nope I didn't go off the deep end. I'm off to get some more eggnog
BTW. I like the new look.

Hi William,
ahh..I see, so you could buy them new at least for awhile today until they sold out.
They would make an ok starter ppc if the buyer understands up front not every add-on and software title out there is going to work with it. But for basic task management, calendar they'd be fine.
Send me some of that eggnog! 8)

You did the same thing with the Toshiba e740 last year. I'm not sure how good a recommendation that was -- I seem to recall reading that the e740 had numerous problems. Maybe Toshiba fixed them via ROM updates, but I'm an iPAQ user, so I didn't pay too much attention.
However, does that explain why I keep seeing "news" from about.com every year about the Toshiba e740? I subscribe to Google News E-mails about Pocket PCs and have seen several stories about the e740 (which always seem to be the same -- like mentioning WiFi).

One of the unique things about the Palmtops/PDAs site is that we get a wide range of readers looking for buying information. For those of us who are PDA geeks, we look for the latest and great things. Many of my readers know nothing about PDAs and want the cheapest way to get into their first PDA, no matter how outdated it may seem to diehard PDA addicts.
So besides mentioning the latest and greatest PDAs, I like to give my readers the ability to view a wide range of PDAs even the older ones. It may seem odd, but I get as many page views from older reviews as my newer reviews. In fact my Dell Axim X50 is still one of my most read reviews even when I don't promote it. All of that combined has pushed Palmtops/PDA into the top 25% of About sites in page views.
And yes the e740 had a few problems when it came out. Most of those were fixed with rom updates. Still, the e740 makes a killer starter PDA for a PDA newbie that can be found for as low as $150
As far as Google alerts, there isn't much of a rhyme or reason of what it pulls. I see Google alerts all of the time on content I wrote about several years ago and forgot about. I think that happens to a lot of sites but Google has seemed to cleaned that up a lot lately.
I do appreciate the feedback It's hard to keep a good balance between the new PDA users and the seasoned PDA users. I'll find a way to introduce the older stuff, so it isn't as confusing as it is.

I understand where you're coming from. I'm just worried that recommending these old PDAs to new users might end up doing more harm than good. Sure, they can probably be had cheaply, but will the manufacturer support a PDA that old? If they will, that's good, but has that support actually been tested for the Dell X5 recently?

If a newbie buys a "new" e740 now, will it have the latest ROM updates? If not, how does the user find out about them? Did you link to a place where they could be downloaded? Even if they are still available, updating the ROM is one of the more confusing (and dangerous) things somebody (especially a newbie) can do.
Also, Toshiba has pulled out the PDA market in the U.S. Will support be available if the user has questions? (Yes, they can go to forums like this, but this isn't the same as official support.)
If I were going to make recommendations to newbies, I'd stick with currently supported PDAs. I think those older PDAs are more suitable for techies who want something cheap for a specific need and know what they're getting into.

You've got some good points. I still think it's a benefit to talk about older value PDAs but I'll definitely look at the appropriate disclaimers and advice.
I really do appreciate the feedback. Make sure you keep checking Palmtops/PDAs because I'm doing some major overhauls and plan on this being a big year for the site.
