Edge Technology

T-Mobile, and Cingular are launching a new technology by the end of the year that will provide broadband speed for WiFi access from anywhere. They are keeping the new PDA very hush hush. No word on any of the new devices. Has anyone heard anything?javascript:emoticon(':P')

EDGE? Cingular better speed things up... fast (EVDO Works)

I'm a Cingular customer with a couple of devices on their network (Siemens 6600 and MPx220). I was attracted to GSM primarily because you can travel to Europe without having to bother getting a temporary travel phone (Verizon's solution). The coverage in the US has gotten MUCH better over the past 18 months and all the hiccups with the ATTW merger seem to largely be in the past. EDGE, however, is a letdown. I've tried using it in a PC card (yawn), and upload/download speeds on the 6600 and MPx are best described as "okay." Flash forward to my current demo of the Siemens i730 with Verizon's EVDO...
In a word -- Zoom. It works. It seems to be well deployed in the greater Boston area so that the phone works as promised (it looks for both 1x and EVDO and shows you which one it's using at any given moment). I live near the ocean too and even there I pick up a pretty consistent hi-speed signal. Nice. Very nice. I'm always impressed when technology actually seems to work as promised and here, Verizon is right on the mark. I see now that Sprint is catching up with Verizon and is finally rolling out their brand of the EVDO. Sprint has always been good on the features and gadget front but I've always found their network and customer service to be quite spotty. It can be great. And it can also s***.
In terms of reception in the US anyway, I would think that at this point Verizon and Cingular are quite close. They both have around 50 million subscribers (give or take a few million -- last check still had Cingular ahead here). Okay, so what's with the data service differences? When I use the current Cingular data service and compare it with the current Verizon data service my reaction is basically dismay that Cingular is so slow. CDMA vs. GSM arguments aside (I'm not a technician so aside from what I've learned in various forums, I have to assume that both technologies have their share of pluses and minuses).
Last word out there though is that Cingular (I have no idea if T-Mobile is in the same position) that come year's end they will finally roll out their own hi-speed data service. If past experience with Cingular (and ATTW) is any indicator, this means we'll likely see it some time in 2006. In the end, I like the GSM portability model that Cingular's network supports vs. the "we own you now" model of the Verizon CDMA technology. Let's hope the technology really is coming along sooner rather than later because there's no denying that Verizon's network is -- right now anyway -- far and away ahead of Cingular's network on the data front. Cingular's EDGE, by comparison, has gotten quite dull.
