Do i really need a VGA PPC? or IPAQ 5555 vs. X50v

Hi all.
I have been using my IPAQ 5555 for over a year now. Today i got a brand new Dell X50v in the mail and I am playing with it now. A few thoughts I am having so far:
1. My old softs look crappy on it. Among them are: TomTom Navigator(#1) Pocket Informant 4 (#2), WebIS mail, Resco Picture viewer and File explorer, numerous games, Pocket TV and AOL IM, Omega Battery and Wisbar Advance plug-ins.
2. My g-f has the Axim x30, i installed some of the above apps for her and the thing kept crashing... soft reset after soft reset. Mostly in Pocket TV. Wonder if the X50v will be so unstable. Ipaq 5555 doesnt freeze nearly as much as the the x30 did.
3. My final thought is should I keep it or stay with the IPAQ. There are too few apps that take advantage of the VGA screen right now. Yes it looks MUCH cleaner and sharper, and costs less then the 5555 cost me, but... even if i sell the IPAQ for $350 (ebay rates) i will still have to shell out another $100 for the Dell... is it really worth it? I could try to sweeten the deal by throwing in a 256 MB card with all the softs installed, but i doubt the noobs on ebay will appreciate the value of combined softwares (tomtom alone is $200?).
thanks

It's sort of strange to hear you say that your old apps look bad on it, considering so many people love the VGA displays. it is my opinion, that the VGA devices really shine when it comes to watching movies, Web browsing or doing graphics applications.

the X30 should not crash any more than your iPAQ does. In fact it should crash very rarely. It is my guess that perhaps installing all these applications eight up a lot of the system memory and you are having memory freezes...I'm running an X30 myself, it very rarely crashes and when it does crash it is because I'm running too many applications.

How much time will you spend watching movies on your device? Or browsing the Internet? I would say that if you are going to be doing those two tasks frequently you might want to hang on to the VGA device. If not you may want to just stick with your iPAQ.

Actually, from what I understand, the OS in VGA stretches the pixels of the QVGA apps. Makes them look "blocky" in most cases that i saw.

WM2003 Second Edition compensates for this in a variety of ways. Plain text is automatically rendered at the proper size and with greater sharpness and clarity--you'd hardly even know that something like Pocket TV Browser or your favorite email program weren't natively VGA compatible. Old graphics, and graphic intensive programs that don't support VGA, are handled by a process called pixel doubling. This is where the OS takes what would be one dot on an old screen, and doubles both its width and length. Essentially, the old programs are stretched to fit the new screen. This tends to cause them to look a bit blockier than they would on an older screen, but it's the price paid for compatibility with older applications. As current applications get updated to take advantage of the new screens, this concern should go away
Most non-essential apps were installed on the storage card of the Axim, not in main memory. And only one or two were running at a time...
I mostly use it for GPS, Pocket Informant, Internet browsing and movies. In that order

I have the X50v and had an Axim X5.
The X50 is only marginally compatible with a few of my old apps but they are being updated daily and many were already updated and I just hadn't checked as they were running fine on the X5.
My eyes are getting older and I don't have any use for "true VGA" in most cases but the general screen clarity is much easier on me the rest of the time.
The hardware EQ is great and the graphic chip will shine more in the future. ( I can hook you up with the frereware app that supports the sound chip if you like)
I have more soft resets right now than on my X5 but I expect that to disappear with the newer apps replacing the older ones. (it has only increased as I add back more of my old games and the like).
The sound recording is much better and you can use a mic/earphone headset or a wired mic in the phone jack for even better range and quality. I plan to test for usable line-in.
I am happy and will keep mine.

Of all the different reviews and white papers I've seen on the Dell Axim X50, I never realized you could use a wired mike in the phone jack! That is a great feature. I saw an add-on card that was in compact flash format it was retailing for about $150. basically all it did was let you use an external microphone with your Pocket PC. I guess if you buy the X50 you get it for free
