I'm buying a Dell X50V

Jealous? Any tips? Words of warning?
Thanks. I'll let you know all about it after I get it, anyone else got one?

At present I'm very seriously considering returning my Loox 720, so that I can purchase a X50v.
I'm finding that the Loox 720 regulaly 'freezes' e.g on a 6hr battery rundown I had to soft reset FIVE times.
All I was doing was playing a couple of albums in .wma format and had a game running, just like I do most days when travelling to work. One or other of the apps froze each time requiring a soft reset.
I tried running different games, but they still froze. I can't alternate windows media player as I haven't installed another player (I was kinda hoping the media player would suffice as it did on my Ipaq 3970).
The freezing reminds me of my first Pda a Jornada 928 WDA, which was a really pain in the @rse, what with all the freezing and poor phone capabiliites.
The freezing coupled with the lack of sync & recharge cables and cases is driving me nuts.
Maybe I gave in an brought too soon, before any decent accessories were released? But the Dell seems to be going strong in the accessories department.

I have an Axim X50v on order and stuck in pre-production hell. However, every time I call or do a customer service chat they give me some sort of appeasement item. All I wanted was expediting my order to get it moving and so far they have given me a $35 coupon, a $150 discount, free next day shipping and a 2 mp digital camera(not as good as it sounds but its free, next day shipping included) but still no movement on the Axim. Soon, I hope, but if not, four or five more expedite requests and I won't have to do any Christmas shopping. If it doesn't speed up at all I get it Dec. 2.

If I had more dollars than sence, I'd have gotten an Ipaq as I could have bought it today and got it today. As I am financing with Dell and not predisposed to oppose Dell, I bought the X50v. I personally know of no reason other than the insane wait for the initial unit to avoid the X50v. I have read several hundred threads from those who have received them and almost all are happy with the purchase. Most of those who are not, are specific gamers who also hated the comparable Ipaq or new owners who either expect a laptop in a PDA or just don't yet know what they are doing. There are the usual compatibility bugs with some software. Every new unit of any brand has them. Get it. If you don't like it, send it back.
Oh, and I cancelled the cheezy camera. They are sending me a free 1gig CF instead.

You didn't ask me.
Seriously. I bought an Axim a little over a year ago. No one I knew had one, and they're not available in retail outlets so it was basically a "blind buy". All the reviews in the world cannot take the place of actually holding the device in your hands and kicking the tires.
The order process is archaic. Dell treats every sale as if they're selling 100 servers to a Fortune 500 corporation. You place the order, the order then is reviewed, then it is placed, then there's the protracted process of checking the status of your order as if you were getting a Rolls Royce hand-assembled. It's a mass-market PDA, it shouldn't take weeks from order placed to order shipped. Heck, my MINI Cooper was built faster than my Axim order.
I won't even get started on the subject of Dell CustomerCare.
I managed to get a quick test drive at an X50v when I was traveling last week. (I was sitting next to someone who had one while waiting for my connecting flight in Detroit and we swapped devices for a few moments.)
People have a different view of quality than I do, but the Axims still look and feel cheap and flimsy. I don't feel inclined to convince others to agree with me, so if they think it is a great device... more power to them.
As for "having more dollars than sense", you get what you pay for. It makes more sense for me to buy a quality device that has excellent support from the manufacturer, a device that I can actually see and try before I buy, a device that will have 3rd party support (for things like cases, keyboards, battery extenders, cables, etc.).
The price difference between a Dell and an iPAQ or Toshiba is between $100-200. If you keep your device for 2 years that comes out to $50-100 a year extra. A YEAR! Hardly a noticeable amount.
But hey, that's just me. I don't expect others to think the same way. Everyone has their own priorities.

My company is Dell Premier so our experience may be different. We have always had great service from Dell on everything we purchase and everything we sell. I have an Axim 30 and it is great.

sracer is right about the ordering...it is a bit of a wait..3 weeks or so.
The dell may feel a bit flimsy as well. it isn't as sturdy feeling as my old h2215. but the side grips haven't fallen off yet, since there aren't any :P

Hey, the side grips on my Maestro haven't fallen off, and they make great replacement stylus's too XP
Well I've gone and done it, I figured the wait was going to be painful and long when I was customizing it and it said the ship date was a week from then. In my personal opinion, if you were doing business on ebay you would be shot if your item arrived at the buyer's house a week from when he bought it, much less you shipping it a week from sale. However, I'm not *terribly* impatient, and I am still learning about pocket pc's, right now it looks like my best choice would be an ipaq, but that shouldn't be too soon unless the dell has a flaw that hinders me from doing whatever I need.
Thank you so much for all your input, I'll be letting you know how it goes.

I don't really think you will be disappointed. I agree completely with Sracer on the ordering process and customer care before the sale on Dell. I, however, have had excellent support after the sale. The $100-200 more for Ipaq ia more than I paid for the 2 year run over it with your car and its still covered warranty. As to 3rd party support, I have a Krusell, Sena, and Piel Frama case for my X5 as well as a Belkin BT card, and Wifi card, an Ultramote 50 ft IR extender, a Micro-innovations IR keyboard, 3 brands of screen protectors, a Haicom GPS, 4 brands of flash media, and a Mugen battery. 3rd party is no problem.
As to flimsy, the X50 case was designed by the same folks as several of the Ipaqs and they don't get that kind of response.

My X5 had side grips and they didn't fall off in the nearly 2 years I used it.

Well here's a tip, I called and asked about the shipping date, and my order shipped 5 days after I ordered it instead of the predicted 20. I really wish I had called the first day.

I have mine in hand and I really don't think you'll be disappointed. I have had to download a few updates for my software to work but most work fine. Of course the button layout is taking a bit of adjustment. I keep accidentally starting the Wifi or hitting the record button. I love the button lock.

Well I'm glad to know it's been a relatively easy switch, I can't wait until mine gets here. I assume next-day doesn't apply if the delivery date is a sunday, or does it?

Well I've got it an I love it. I haven't run into any problems except SNES emulation, and I couldn't do that on my old PPC (too slow) So I'm not to distraught. I'm thrilled to death with the WiFi, very strong signal and built in is great. The screen is nice, as is the speed. The infared is very strong (PPC, become a $15 tv remote! *poof*)
My Pocket PC has now become a daily use, always in pocket, for fun and profit great little device.

Is what I use
http://www.hyperdictionary.com/dicti...ubmit1=Explode
That's a free one (Although untested and looks clunky) However, it's proabably the only free tv remote for pocket pc out there.

I have not used pdawin's product for a couple years. It is weird that they seem to get poor reviews, but apparently it works just fine.
do you use any of the Phillips pronto templates?

I ordered mine from medium/large business sales last week.. had it within 3 days of pressing 'submit'.
My follow up order for the 2200mAh battery, shipped same day.
Looks like they're a little quicker these days. I love my X50v so far.. the bluetooth and wifi work well..
Once you get pocket informant on there for your PIM, a better keyboard, and a new file explorer.. its cake. I have no complaints so far.. However, this is my first PPC device.. I've been using Palm sine the mid 90's.. and im sick of my Treo 600, and dealing with Sprint when it breaks. The 650 wasn't as nice as I had hoped it would be.. so I was forced to go to a separate PDA and bluetooth phone (LG PM325 from sprint.. comes out in 2 weeks)
