I have been lucky with my wifi locating system so far. Currently, I am using ministumbler to locate wifi hotspots when I am out and about. Before I used wi-fi-fo-fum. The problem is that although these are very good freeware apps, they aren't totally compatible with all Pocket PCs and Wireless cards. If you find yourself in that category, you may opt for an external wifi hotspotter.
One that was just mentioned at Gizmodo is the Canary Wireless Hotspotter. It is more expensive than may of the alternatives (use search to find more) but it seems to offer more info than the simpler models such as signal strength and SSID. "The Digital Hotspotter™ is the first full-featured, second-generation Wi-Fi detection and analysis device. Like "first generation" analog Wi-Fi detectors, the Digital Hotspotter™ detects signal availability and strength. However, it is the only device of its kind that provides essential information about wireless networks, including: Network ID, Signal strength, Encryption status and channel"
