Windows Mobile SE SLUGGISH?

I recently got a Dell Axim x30 Mid 312Mhz (my third ppc). Of course, comes with WM2003 Second Edition. (I like the landscape view switch on-the-fly, especially with the bluetooth keyboard.) I got it for small form factor, bluetooth, the Dell branded ThinkOutside keyboard, battery life increase [SUPER] and for a small performance increase over the PXA255 and PXA263 400Mhz processors.
I really DID NOT see the difference in performance. In fact, it feels like my Toshiba e755 runs circles around the Dell. Now, I am looking to buy a Toshiba e800 [VGA!], and reading reviews I am seeing NEGATIVE comments about the SE OS. So I am wondering if that is why my Axim seems sluggish sometimes.
Can someone explain why SE seems to be SO SLOW? (is it the price we pay for a fuller OS?)
