The hx4700 has problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The hx4700 has problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, I have been doing some tests before to come and publish my conclusion here. From those test now I can tell that there are two groups of hx4700 in the market, one where .NET programs run without any problem and another group where the initialization of the imageslist object that contains the pictures to be used in the toolbar of the program produce an error. I have compared the software installed in both groups and it's the same, so it led me to think that there is a major difference from the point of view of hardware between these two groups.
I have created a little tool to prove my point. This tool will give an error in some hx4700s and it will run fine in other. Those with the error are the one that had problems at the begining with Tweaks2k2, WiFiFoFum and other programs. I have found a workaround to be used in programs created in VB .NET, but that workaround does not work properly in C# .NET programs.
I really think that we should contact HP and request from them a fix for this problem.
To find out if your hx4700 is one of the buggy, just uncompress this file, copy it to your hx4700 and run it. If you are able to read the main screen of the program that means that your PPC does not have any problem. If you get an error that means that you got one of the buggy hx4700.
If you are going to buy in the store one hx4700 I would recommend you to take this little exe copied in a SD Card and run it

Mind if I post this on Tools? It needs to get out to people quickly if there's a bad batch. THis is the first I've heard of any problems, though.

Be my guest, i was going to do it now. Only one condition, post a poll, so we can have an idea of how many are bad.

it's to early to say anything yet. but so far I can tell you that your device is going to have some problems running certain .NET applications.

So here is the $100 million dollar question. What was the problem? and how did you fix it? Was it something to do with image caching in the registry?

it's a bug in the ATI driver, the fix was found by people that claimed that they were using betaplayer and did not have the problem. So pickard the author of that program told us what that programs change in the registry.

I'm now able to run my Mobilearn Talking Phrasebook software (www.mobilearn.net), which was previously bombing on a .NET error
I'll post again if I find any new issues, but for now everything looks good.
Thank you so much for the fix!
Will it end up being put in Tweaks2K2 ?

Basically that fix disable the BitMap Cache in the ATI driver, so it will be added in next version of Tweaks2K2 and in the help note of that feature I'll specify that that option could fix this problem in hx4700s

I believe I know how to identify the failure by the sticker!

This is a good idea, but I think it's ALOT simpler than this. I have access to a few hx4700's/hx4705's and have tried the test at:
http://www.pc-counselor.com/bin/hx4700fix.zip
on all of them. I found a simple correlation. Every one of theIPAQ 470x's has a sticker under the battery. Look at the bottom row of information.... the unit will be identified as either a hx4700 or hx4705
but, and this the REAL IMPORTANT part...
LOOK AT THE REVISION # COx-->C02 OR C03 TO THE RIGHT OF THE MODEL 470x DESIGNATION--***EVERY*** C03 I TESTED PASSED THE TEST AT THE URL ABOVE, AND EVERY CO2 FAILED. I'd hate to see a CO1...
This is a simple hardware revision issue---I hope I don't cause a huge surge of returns, but the .NET incompatibility/bitmap caching problem with the ATI Imagineon (or whatever it's called) video processor is not cool...
Hope that helps... that's my two cents... Thankfully my hx4700 is a CO3 model...

Oh, and I forgot to mention in my last post w/ the "C03 revision=not buggy" discovery.. GREAT WORK ctitanic on this fix/tool...as a former FAE for Intel, I can appreciate it's elegance....

The link to the fix is down.
Thanks,
