They're taking orders for the e830 in Japan.
I just got an email from PDA Kobo that the e830 (standard) and the e830W (wireless (i.e. WIFI)) are up for order. The standard model features neither WIFI or Bluetooth and so... I mean... what's the point??? I guess they want to ease the Palm crowd in slowly.
There's no mention on the site if the units are in stock or if this is a pre-order. It is unusual for Japanese companies to advertise something they don't have in stock (YMMV) so I'm betting they're ready to ship. If you wanna look at the sales pages here they are for the wireless and the standard model. The prices are \75,000 and \68,000 yen respectively (around $680 and $620 dollars US).
If you're really itching to get one of these things and you're ready to take a walk on the wild side, PDA Kobo will take orders from overseas (see the FAQ here, in Japanese of course). Now will they take English orders or will you have to speak Japanese? I don't know. The company has a few English pages on their site but the contents are all Palm stuff and they haven't been updated since mid 2002. I have done business with them before here and trust them... FWIW. The FAQ says they will take orders from overseas but the money has to be deposited directly into their bank account before they will process the order. This is standard practice for mail commerce domestically and it should be easy for any bank to wire the funds for you once you get their international routing number. Of course they mention that all the shipping charges have to be prepaid and you have to pay any customs duties or the like.
Remember that the unit will come with a Japanese version of WM2003se. It should run almost all your PPC software (my Casio e2000 ran English progs without a hitch) but all the included apps (and that means Genio Speech as well) are going to be in Japanese. If you know your way around the OS the language won't be a problem... all the options are the same. It's just when you run into some problem that you may be stumped. If you've ever been looking for an excuse to start your Japanese study this might be it.
If anyone is really interested I'll call, harass them with my pidgin speak and try to get some details. UPDATE: The front page sez that the units are "now delivering." UPDATE the SECOND: Here's Toshiba's eGenio page with all new e830 graphics... ohhhhh pretty. And the sales brochure PDF file.... ahhh PDA porn...
Wel, it seems the elusive e830 will be available in Canada. I was on toshiba.ca last night, and it is there, and several canadian online dealers are listing it (roughly $670CAN) .. as tempting as it may be, I'm still Heavily leaning towards the HP ipaq hx4700... I've been without a PPC for 6 months now, and its become unbearable.
