Folks are beginning to receive their new iPAQ HX4700's today. Several sites are showing them in stock, although it seems some are not quite telling the truth.
I tried to order from eCost.com today. They stated it was in stock with same day shipping available, but only after ordering and calling did I find out that they were not receiving them until tomorrow.
I ordered another one today from Buy.com. It says it's processing. We'll find out tomorrow.
I've had one on backorder at CDW for months now. I emailed my rep there and was told that they received a shipment today and that my order should be shipping tonight.
Only tomorrow will tell! editor's note: Worth talking about...Modded up!
I actually ordered one from the HP Small business site and when I got to the submit button....I stopped....I figured I would wait just a little bit longer to see how much the Dell X50 is......$649 is alot of money and I didn't want to spend the money only to be sorry in a month.....kind of like how I feel now after selling my e805 and finding out that the e830 is not being sold in the US.

I look forward to review, Brad. I'm especially interested in whether you can adjust screen brightness (or have to settle for auto control), whether apps loaded into flash work okay, battery life, version of PI imstalled, speed, and what you can gauge about alarm reliability. I'm trying to resist buying one until I find these things out, but will power is not mg strong point.
thanks,
Bruce

Bruce, I think you mean tkester, not me (Brad) But if someone decides to send me a unit, I'll be happy to review it.
tkester, you thinking you might want to write a review? Fingers crossed
Brad,
You're right - I posted from my e800, and WiFi loads a bit slow, so I jumped to the bottom of the posting as soon as I could to go ahead and write my thoughts out.
tkester,
My apologies for not being more observant.
I am very interested in your impressions.
Thanks,
Bruce
Okay....I took the plunge....I placed my order for the hx4705 today....the ship date is estimated at 10/9/2004 ... But that's okay....it's better than not having any VGA device....

Welcome to the VGA club bkbroil. I have really enjoyed my e800 (upgraded to WM2003SE), and have also decided to get an hx4700 (faster processor, better battery life, bluetooth as well as wifi, and so on). I was intending to buy one tonight with overnight delivery from ecost, as I had noted in other forums that ecost shipped several of them today with overnight delivery - however I just spoke with an ecost rep (I was surprised someone answered at 8:30 PM Eastern), and she said they are now out of stock until October 4.
This looks like an outstanding device. I'm not knocking the e800, because it is a good unit, and Toshiba is to be commended for introducing VGA as early as they did. But, the hx4700 definitely looks like a step up, so I might as well join you in purchasing one. I'll be keeping my eyes open for the 4700's to pop up at other e-tailers, but if nothing shows up next week, I guess I'll go back to ecost on 10/4 as I have good experience with them in the past (that's where I got my e800, in fact).
Again, you are going to Love VGA!
bvkeen -- I too love the VGA devices...in fact I wrote up a review about my e805 a little over a year ago and the ONLY reason I sold my e805 on eBay was so that I could purchase the e830 as soon as they came out.......I was VERY UPSET when I found out they were definetly not being sold in the US.. ......but that's okay....I agree with you....the hx4705 is definetly a step up.... BTW....I HAD to get a VGA device.....I have too many movies saved from Pocket-DVD Studio coded just for the VGA resolution...

I'm sure we'll see a review of the 4700 from BK when he gets it. I'm very interested in your impression of the touchpad. I absolutely HATE them on every laptop I've ever owned and can't get a feel for how I'd like it on a PPC.

You'll have to forgive bvkeen. He just got a new SPOT watch and he's still giddy.

jk's right about me being "giddy" and caught up in these new gadgets: between a SPOT watch and all the PDAs I have bought in the past and the laptops, my kids are going to be disappointed with their inheritence! Oh well, hopefulll we've taught them how to get by on their own.
I had forgotten that you had an e800 bkbroil, and I'm sorry you were let down by the e830.
Off topic: it looks like (I HOPE, I HOPE) the problem I been having with alarms on WM2003 and WM2003SE is solved. I did a hard reset a few days ago, cleaned out a lot of old appointments out of outlook, and loaded only the really essential software on my e800 (PI, TextMaker, and so forth). I did not load any software that has its own alarm functions, such as ListPro or PhatNotes or PhatPad or any alarm clocks, although I don't know that this is really part of the fix (I think cleaning out outlook and resetting was the biggest part of the fix). I also loaded the latest WakeupTweak and CheckNotifications and ClearNotify. The alarms have been working since then!
And, of course I've got my SPOT watch, just in case.
Bottom line: I am confident I'll be happy with the 4700 and will order one as soon as I can make up my mind on which e-tailer to order from. I don't think I'll be tickled with the touchpad, but I doubt that I'll be bothered by it either. I expect to operate mostly with screen taps and buttons, as I have always done.
I may write a review, or would be happy to collaborate with someone on writing one, but I gotta get it first.
Take care guys!
Okay, I just placed my order with ecost for the 4705, with a (hopeful) shipping date of 10/4/04, evernight.
There has been a discussion thread at BH in the 4705 forum in which Dr. Miller, of HP, answered numerous questions on the device, and the answers to all of the great questions asked sold me on this device. http://discussion.brighthand.com/sho...252#post723252
If I find anything particularly noteworthy about the device that I haven't seen in another review, I'll submit a review of it. My hunch is that this is going to be reviewed numerous times before I even get mine. But, we'll see ...
Later,
Bruce
