I am eagerly awaiting the announcement of Toshiba's e830. I started to think I should look at the other VGA devices to make sure that I'm not making a rash decision. I began researching HPs hx4705 and it really looks nice. and.....it has a 624mhz Bulvedere processor (the fastest available) and being as fickle as I am....I thought "Why not get the same 4" screen, SD slot, CF slot, WiFi, Bluetooth and the newest gadget...the Touchpad"
I found a nice review on the hx4705 Touchpad from PCWorld. It turns out that it's not all its cracked up to be. In fact its downright frustrating.

The whole touchpad concept loses a lot of appeal once you need to do anything that requires using the stylus. Since you instinctively want to use the touchpad with your writing hand, you wind up juggling the stylus (and possibly dropping it) when you could just as easily be using it to navigate faster and more efficiently
I'm glad I found the article because I'm will continue to wait eagerly for the Toshiba e830.....besides I still have:
1. A Vaja case (Specific for the Toshiba e8xx)
2. Mugen extra capacity battery (Specific for the Toshiba e8xx)
3. 1GB CF card and 3 512mb SD cards (technically could work with any PPC)
4. Stowaway IR keyboard (technically could work with any PPC)
5. CF GPS reciever (technically could work with any PPC)
6. Proporto 3 in 1 stylus (Specific for the Toshiba e8xx)
7. Toshiba sync-n-go USB cable (Specific for the Toshiba e8xx)
8. Netfront's Access for Toshiba browser (Specific for the Toshiba e8xx)
........left over from my Toshiba e-805....waiting eagerly for their new home.
Do you think the Touchpad is an idea that will catch on?

I donīt want to repeat here what I already have said in BH http://discussion.brighthand.com/sho...hreadid=109785
and like I said in another thread in this forum, in less than a week I have read two articles at pcworld and itīs hard for me to chose which one is the worse p... of s....
BTW, do you know that the 830 wont be released at USA at least for now and itīs not clear yet if itīs going to be released in the future?
I just found out...

Thanks for the link! I'm reading the thread now and ya know what...everyone makes alot of sense....I don't think the touchpad will be a bad thing.....Well....it can't be, because I think it's my only option for a 4 inch VGA device at the moment.

According to an HP meeting I attended some time back the touchpad idea was to reduce stylus use and therefore screen ware. I do not think I have ever used my controller on any of my HP units - just the buttons for mail etc.
I really want to have SD and Compact Flash - I have a Sprint PCS card for the Compact Flash... I have a Pharos GPS unit (serial) so I am looking to just replace my PPC. I am really not sure I want a phone / PPC combo unit -especially if that marries me to any specific cell vendor.
Mixed emotions about the future of the PPC - I have been at some IT conferences lateley and heard some not so good news for PPC market - i.e. over 50% of all users say activesync is problematic and is 2 years behind on substainal upgrades, OS is falling behind and most corporate users 72% failed at implementing microsoft-activesync-server for Exchange 2003 - not very good news.
I would agree on all counts, I have implemented activesync-server with SSL certificates and it is not straightforward, however, it can be accomplished.
BTW bkbroil this news was posted by Brad the last week I believe.
Any way here is a summary of what people said about this review

Saying the 6300 is better than the hx4705 is like saying that an acoustic guitar is better than an electric guitar. They both have their own individual places and cannot truely be compared.
AND HOLY HELL, she wrote a HUGE article on JUST the touchpad. Couldn't she have actually utilized her early release to do some benchmarking and the like?
Quote:
She obviously didn't play with it very long and I would guess she doesn't like touchpads in general.

i would not expect more from someone "reviewing" a pocket pc with aparently NO backround in that field.
Quote:
oh and recommending a pocket pc phone edition device over the hx4700? whats that about? Did anyone tell her that these devices target different markets? if she did reccomend a pcoket pc (not pe) over hx4700 i would accept it, but a phone edition? come on. Does she really get paid to write that stuff?

Is it me, or does it seem like she doesn't realize she doesn't have to use the touch pad. She probably couldn't find the stylus let alone remove the cover so the touch screen can work.
Thanks for the translated link!
It's missing a couple of things I would like:
USB connection and CIR. I can probably live with the touch pad - I don't use the buttons much now.
The 4" VGA screen and the faster processor are the real selling points here!

I had both and I never used the USB host, and the CIR just a few times in a whole year.

I don't use the CIR much now, but it's something that has been in the iPaqs that won't now. Kind of like the fingerprint security on the 5555. It was cool, but I didn't use it much.
The ability to have a USB port, or ability to connect a USB device, would be nice with the increasing popularity of USB keys.

but is not so confortable, you have to connect them to the cradle, at least that was the way in the Casio 200, Toshiba e740 and e750. I donīt think that any of the new ones has the USB port in the PPC body.
The Toshiba e800 has an optional USB host cable that let's you use USB without the cradle and the presentation pack has a USB port on it.

Has been 2 year since I sold my e740 so I can remember exactly but I believe that the expansion pack had an usb conector also. has the e800 an USB jack in the body of the PPC? let me ask it in a different way, can the e800 be connected to a keyboard without having to use any adaptor or expansion pack?

No I'm afraid not. It's either the host cable or the presentation pack.
