Am I the only person wondering what happened over at HP that they have sort of hurt their reputation as Pocket PC leaders by releasing the rz1715 model?. It's getting some pretty bad reviews in Pocket PC land. On the other hand, the hx4700 might just recover some of their rep. It appears to be using up to date hardware and may even be too robust for today's software.
PC Magazine has published their review of the HP iPAQ hx4700 comparing it to such models as the Axim X30 and the older iPAQ h5550's. "HP's new iPAQ hx4700 is a clear case of software not living up to the hardware: With a VGA screen and 624-Mhz processor, the hx4700 is a sleek, gorgeous, and powerful handheld computer that's waiting for the right software to make it really shine.
At 6.6 ounces, with a gray magnesium casing, our preproduction hx4700 unit feels solid and professional in your hand. A sturdy plastic cover protects the screen, but we found it annoying because it kept threatening to flip back into place while we were working. A tiny touchpad replaces the usual four-way navigation button. HP says the pad allows one-handed operation, but the one on our early test unit was somewhat balky. Still, it's a neat idea. "
Why on earth would you compare the only VGA device HP has with older iPaqs? I don't understand doing that and not comparing it to the Toshiba or the Asus if they had one. All graphic benchmarks I've seen on any VGA device show worse results than those on QVGA only devices. I suppose that's because the VGA video is pushing 4 times as much data around.
It will be nice to someday seeing a head to head among the various VGA devices.

Probably because often times "reviews" (not the device itself) are sent to magazines. When a review seems to be a puff piece, there's a good chance that the text of the review was provided to the publisher.
