For those of you without built in Wifi IpaqHQ has posted a review of the Sandisk 256MB + Wi-Fi Combo Card. The review has plenty of screenshots to take you through the setup and evaluation data. Ok. You have an SD slot, but you want Wi-Fi. Buy a new Pocket PC? No, thanks to Sandisk, you can now have your cake and eat it too! You can store 256MB (241mb available) of your favorite games and MP3s on a SD Wi-Fi card. SanDisk has announced the availability of a new 256 MB + Wi-Fi SD Combination card, the world's first card to include both memory and WLAN (802.11b) communications in a single SD card. Pros:
Price
Functionality (dual purpose)
Ease of installation
Size of file storage (256mb) Cons:
Small quirk with powering down the Pocket PC

Although I know that this is a welcomed card for "single slotters"... I have to wonder just how useful this will be in actual use. I haven't had to deal with the issues assocated with a single slot for quite some time so please bear with me....
If you have a single slot, you will most likely install many apps on a standard SD card. Or, install a majority of apps in memory and few on the card.
Since this combo card protrudes from the unit, it is not likely that this card will be kept in the device unless it is needed.
Given that, it seems like the memory portion of the combo card is not going to be as useful as a standalone memory card (which can be left in the device all the time). When using the WiFi portion of the combo card a person will most likely not take advantage of the memory.
All this to say, I don't see this combo card reducing the necessity to remove and insert cards. Whether a person had separate memory and WiFi SD cards or this combo card, they'll still be swapping the card. And in some senses, it is worse because you can't use the memory card all the time without having the WiFi portion sticking out.
If the combo card was designed such that it didn't protrude as much and could safely be left in the device... THEN that is something!
sracer,
I share your concern for the card protruding from the PPC. My CF wifi card protrudes a good bit. However the card itself is thick and sturdy. My SD cards on the other hand are thin and pliable. If an SD card popped out a whole lot from the top of my device, I'd wonder if it would bend and what would happen if it indeed bended?
Maybe knelson could shed some insight as he has the SD wifi card. Do you pocket your ipaq with the card inserted? Is it flimsy?
I'll let you know once I get one, as one of the things I intend to do is keep my Pocket PC in my pocket the majority of the time and still have that in there. I think it should be protected enough as long as you don't have anything else in your pocket, it also seems this is all one card, there's no seam between the antenna and the rest of it or anywhere, so it should be fairly sturdy. I intend to use this as my main memory solution and thus have it left in all the time.
