PDABuyersGuide.com has posted a review of the Sony U50. This is an Ultra Personal Computer that beat the OQO and the Flipstart to market. I would really like to see one of these up close and personal. The jury is still out for me on the UPCs.

Conclusion Pro: This unique machine combines the strengths of a PDA with a Windows PC. It has a touch screen that works with any PDA stylus, is incredibly small and portable yet runs Windows XP. Despite its small size, it offers plenty of expansion and ports: It has VGA, USB 2.0 and Firewire ports, wired Ethernet and a Memory Stick slot and a CF slot. Integrated 802.11g WiFi works well and will keep you connected. Lots of goodies come with it: docking station/port replicator, folding USB keyboard, VGA/Ethernet dongle, carry case, AV remote, earbud headphones and a carry strap. Cons: Price! No included internal or external optical drive means you'll have to provide your own CD or DVD drive. 800 x 600 resolution seems low by today's standards, but is certainly usable. Not exactly a desktop replacement in terms of performance but that would be a lot to ask of such a small unit. No PCMCIA slot.
How about you? Do you think you'll purchase a UPC in the future?

Yes. You are looking at my next "Pocket-likePC." But there is still a place for the traditional PPC because people are not always going to want a really expensive, largish media center to be toting around.
But if most of your computing work is done inside, in one safe location, then that U70 is getting darn attractive. And for work in Japanese, where a large writing area and advanced handwriting recognition system are highly desirable, it's gonna beat PPC hands down in situations where you're doing a lot of writing or note-taking.
I'm already on the lookout for this puppy. The pricing is reasonable and it seems fully featured. It's odd to think that, for most people's purposes, a device like this will make their laptops seem too large and bulky.
Depends strictly on battery life and instant on capability. These devices are not only going to have to replace the PPC but also a laptop. Think about it, are you going to use this as your main system? Also a PPC can be easily synced to your main system and have all your PIM stuff intact. Can you sync a UPC to your main system? Or is it going to have to replace your main system so all your email is in one place?
Another consideration- how much time do you spend maintaining your laptop/ main system? Windows update, spyware, anti-virus, etc. Updating your MS Office system periodically. If you have both main system and a UPC you'll have to do it twice. I don't think the capability is there yet for one of these tiny PCs to replace your main system.
I could be wrong and I do think the U-70 is an incredible device. The techno-geek in me wants one bad.
