Review: Medion MDPPC250 PocketPC GPS Bundle

I can't say I have heard too much about the company Medion until I saw a snippet over at Engadget about their new GPS Pocket PC. The Register has put together a review of the Medion MDPPC250 that you should check out if you are looking for an all-in-one GPS/PPC. The author indicates that most people who are buying this device are looking for inexpensive GPS. We like inexpensive as much as the next guy, so if the PPC and GPS features are good this one might be a keeper!
"The MDPPC250 is a slim (11.4 x 7.1 x 1.3cm), light (124g) PocketPC that's not bad looking either. Its all-plastic casing doesn't feel too shabby - though the stylus has a habit of rattling when stowed. More positively, the 970mAh battery is removable and sits behind a tight-fitting hatch on the rear of the unit. The SD card/MMC slot on the top of the device is a little fiddly to use, with too little finger room to push a card far enough in to lock it in place or eject it.
The device is powered by a 266MHz Samsung S3C2410 processor backed by 64MB of RAM, almost 57MB of which is available to the user. The operating system, Windows Mobile 2003, is stored on the 32MB ROM.
GPS
As a budget-priced machine, there are no extras: no Wi-Fi or even Bluetooth. The bundled GPS antenna connects to the PDA through the latter's cradle connector. In fact, it's hooked up in parallel with the car cigarette lighter power jack, leaving wires strewn across your dashboard. Commercial drivers may not care too much, but individuals and business folk may prefer the cleanliness of a wireless solution, like Navman's 4400 series of Bluetooth-based products. Medion does provide a dashboard mount for the PocketPC, however."

Medion PocketPC MDPPC250 MD41800

I bought one of these in the UK when they came out in May 2004, courtesy of Aldi Stores. GBP269.00 or so.
I've found it perfect for my needs... the GPS is adequate for the amount of times I use it... it's great and when not in the car, it's like having an electronic A-Z of UK and Ireland in your hand... but when patched up through the speakers in the car I've found it invaluable if trying to commute/find somewhere for the first time.
The nicest thing about it is the Storage Card - I've got about 50-60 mp3s on one 256kb MMC and again patched through my speakers, does away with all those cassette tapes or CD cases. I'm now looking for a 1GB MMC but not sure if it'll work in the MD41800 (I've emailed Medion.co.uk for clarification on this).
By the way, I found the little pouchy thing it came with a bit flimsy and not robust enough. (It kept activating itself whilst in my handbag, being knocked about etc) So I purchased an aluminium case from a guy on ebay for about GBP16.00 or so, the one that fits a HP 1710/1715 fits the Medion MD41800 very well and it has 2 MMC storage slots. It's super! No more accidental activation.
It also has the Word, Excel cababilities in Pocket PC form. The Calendar, Contacts and Games facility is adequate for my needs. It also has the ActiveSync which when docked will sync up to my PC.
The Microsoft Reader is handy for d/loading Foreign Language dictioneries for use when abroad.
For me, the Medion is a good piece of kit, my only real gripe is that it is without Bluetooth or wireless capability which if it had that, would make Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger accessible on the move but otherwise, for the price I paid... it's perfect. I would recommend it.
