I've gotta say the more I hear about this device, the more I like it. I would question the battery usage, it seems a little short at 4-6 hrs (unless an additional battery is also available). As in wouldn't suffice for a 5hr flight
I wonder if it can be used in portrait mode?

To err is human, but to really foul things up you need a computer.
These little units have to address a couple of things for them to work for me: instant on and battery life. I need all day no matter what and instant on if you want to use it for PIM.

Not that I'm aware of but I'm looking into that. I think that's where blogs differ from other sites like this one. No forums.
Does the RSS feed work Ok? I haven't even looked at it since I'm the only one posting.

I never had a problem with the last site, I thought it looked kinda mellow and relaxing...... but that's just me.
JK's got some good points on the Ultra Portable Devices (UPC) with regards to price, battery life, and 'Instant on'.
However if I remember when Pocketpc's first came out they had quite a run of bugs, cost was an issue and battery life definitely limited the devices .
A few years down the road in the life of a Pocketpc though and most people who own a Pocketpc can't manage without it (without going slightly nuts and frazzled at the edges ).
I'm VERY interested to see what a couple of years down the road will bring for UPC's and PPC's. Could they really co-exist?

I agree with you Addic. There's a niche market for these UPCs right now and price drops down the road will make this even bigger. But, we're hampered by the relatively slow pace that battery improvements are made. These devices with a built in hard drive will EAT batteries for lunch.
Also, think about your PPC and even though you might play around with s/w and configuration it's still very easy to maintain. Now imagine it has a full blown WinXP OS on it and think of the maintenance that will bring. You're on the way out the door for some meeting and the s/w you need for the meeting won't come up, or WinXP hangs up. See what I mean? It raises the complexity of your portable device many times over what you have now.
I still think that the PPC is going in the right direction. Adding more powerful h/w and better s/w with VGA support is the best way to go. The reality of portable devices with small screens is that you can only realistically use one program at a time on the display. WinXP is just overkill for that.

One other point about UPCs vs. PPCs and then I'll be quiet .
What s/w will you run on your UPC? You'll want MS Office of course if that's what you're using on your desktop. A license for that will run you what- $300? You'll need a paid license for every commercial program you install on it. PPC s/w is cheap.

Yup! I agree there are some issues to sort out before these devices could go mainstream.
Just kinda makes me think....... (never a pleasant experience, my head hurts now )
Just how far off would a tricorder (Startrek) like device be....... or are we already there?
A main point of UPC vs PPC is the idea of copying a (Word for example) document on to your handheld device from a pc via USB cable, BT or WIFI without it having to be converted to another document or having to have installed Activestink on the desktop previously. (As USB is most prevalent this would benefit me most, no dongles or other bits required, just plug in and go).
