pocket pc v. smartphone

hi, i'm not completly technology illiterate, but i need to know, whats the differance between these 2 phones? i have a moto q9c smartphone right now. and i know there is a diffeance because pocket pc software wont work on it. can i make documents to go on a ppc? i have a trash service so i make a lot of spread sheets that i print out on my desktop. just wondering if it would be worth the upgrade.

thanks in advance,
jeanine

One of the primary differences between the two is that PPC's use touch screens, while smart phones don't. If you need to edit spreadsheets and other office documents, you might want to look at upgrading~. Verizon just lowered the price of some of their PPC's to $99! I'm sure they have editing programs for the Moto q9c though, you might want to look around first before upgrading.

thank you chris for replying! sorry i havent been able to be on my pc in a few days.

ok, if thats the differance then a pocket pc is a smartphone too then right?

maybe this would help better, i have a trash service, and i am trying to keep up with the technology. i also have back probs, wich means 20-30 minutes is my max in an office chair. but i can spend hours on a phone because i'm not confined to one spot, one position.

i make spread sheets, look up things on the internet, do my accounting with QB, a few documents, emails and txt(mostly to customers), online and mobile payments, managing a website that sort of thing.

is there a phone out there that can do all that, and maybe be more like pc than the phone i have now? a laptop wouldnt work for me so i need a phone. i'm not expecting a portable pc persay, but i just cant seem to get anywere researching by myself. i thought when i got my moto that it was the tops but i see all this pocket pc stuff that wont work on my phone but no one can tell me why so i thought i would just ask.

so should i stay with my moto or is there a better more tech phone that would do what i listed above? what about a pda? is there a way to make pc programs run on a phone? (ex. i use homestead for my website and sitebuilder to make changes, but i can only d that on my pc)

thank you for all your help its very appreciated!

a very confused jeanine!

A Smartphone is basically a watered down Pocket PC, here's an article that might interest you and shed some light on the difference: Pocket PC Phones v. Windows Mobile Smartphones - What's the Difference?

As for what phone you should get... that is really a matter of personal taste, I would go to different carriers and try out the Pocket PC's they have available.

What carrier are you on? There are some pretty advance phones coming out within the next couple of months if you can hold out. Some prominent phones coming out on Windows Mobile are: Omnia2, Tilt2, Touch Pro 2, Diamond.

With whatever Windows Phone you get though, make sure its compatible with the new Windows Mobile OS (Windows 7) that will be released soon. Right now all of phones are running on Windows Mobile 6.1 or 6.5, but 7 will be huge improvement.

The iPhone is Apples "smartphone", it's a more consumer centric phone but is gaining a lot of support from corporations/businesses, who accommodating it to be used by their employees.

Some other phones you might be interested in: Palm Pre, BlackBerry

Ask carriers about their 30 day trial period, and google around to see if the programs you use have compatible versions for the operation system you use on your phone.

The smartphone space is going through some epic times right now. Read this article, it will help you get a better understanding of the industry, wheres it going, and which one you should use for your business: Microsoft's Windows Mobile: Time to Hang Up? - BusinessWeek

Let me know how things go~

i know the blackberry wont work, i need a windows based phone.

i am on us cellular, but i do have an at&t shop i think close by.

what about a pda? do you have any information or links on them?

i will try to reseach this iphone because business is what i am interested in. if it wasnt for my business i would have a phone that will make calls and send simple txt lol.

thank you for the links, i am going to go read them now, really leaning towards a pocket pc.

and one more q, if a smartphone is a watered down pocket pc, then (on a gerneral bases) will a pocket pc do everything a smartphone will do?

do you know about what time the new phones will be coming out? i can wait but i'd like to see them asap.

thanks again, i have posted on 3 or 4 differant forums and your the only one to help so far.

PDA stands for Public Display of Affection! J/K! It stands for Personal Digital Assistant. Essentially a PDA is a Pocket PC but lacks a phone function. They were popular with geeks and business types circa early 90's but now phones have essentially replaced the need for PDA's. I do not recommend you get one. A Pocket PC will do the things a Smartphone can do, and more.

It seems like your going to be a heavy data user, I HIGHLY suggest going with Sprint. They have Pocket PC's (the new Touch Pro2 out Sept 8th~) and by far the cheapest deals on data plans. Cost of ownership for the cheapest data plan (Data Everything.. I think its called) is about $1500 less than ATT (with an iPhone). You can also haggle with them. If you go to a store and find a hungry salesmen, just seem really interested but hesitant and at the last minute tell them.. "I'm all for this phone, but the monthly payments are kinda high, are there any monthly discounts available for new comers?" -never hurts to try right? I was able to get 25% off my monthly payments!

You can also try sprints SERO plan where ARE THE BEST. Browse their phones here (3 most expensive phones are PPC)

Top of the line phones coming out:

Touch Pro2 - Sprint, ATT
Samsung OmniaII - Verizon
HTC Diamond2 - Sprint?

All are going to be released sometime this month or next, youtube them to see reviews.

does the unlock codes i've seen work so that you can use any phone with any carrier?

is the new phone going to be avanced enough that its worth spending the extra money and waiting on them?

thanks again so much! jeanine

The first one and the last one are the only Pocket PC's, the first one is better than the last one. New phones coming out will be better. Are you only looking for phones from US Cellular?

yea and no. i would rather stay with us cellular because i know it has the coverage i need for the area i am in and go in. but i would be willing to take a chance on anther carrier if the phone was that much better and had the stuff ( i know there a geeky word for it lol) that would better able to run my business and what i'm doing.

but if you think that the us cellular phone that is already out and available will do everything i need it to (based on the ist above) then that wuld be great too.

guess what i'm trying to say is, i dont want to upgrade anytime soon again. i'd rather get something that will last me a year or a year and a half. (the longer the better but technology changes)

for instance, if the new phone just have advance features such as contacts management, looks, things like that thats not going to do me any good. but is they come out wit something that you can download your computer programs (like the sitebuilder i use to manage my website) then yes i will wait and try to find another carrier that can give coverage in my area.

thanks again, jeanine

Yeah that phone is pretty nice, but actually a newer version is coming out.. or is already out. If you google Touch Pro2 you'll know what I mean. I don't think you can upgrade this one to windows mobile 7.. Touch Pro 2 is available from T-Mobile right now, and I think sprint and ATT?

Sorry about the Windows Mobile 7 statement, I don't think any phones currently available will be upgradable to 7 as its still in the works. There are some talks about the Touch pro being upgradable to 6.5. Check this out: How To: Install Windows Mobile 6.5 Right Now - Windows mobile 6.5 install guide - Gizmodo

If I were you I'd just get the Touch Pro 2, on some other carrier~

ps what about the unlock codes you see avertised? can you really use any phone with any carrier?

just courious in case i cant find coverage, if not i guess i could go with the touch pro. i'd rather have the touch pro 2 though lol. thanks again!

AT&T
39.99 + 60.00 = 99.99 per month (after a 30 somthing activations fee

Sprint
99.99 per month

T-Mobile
cant make heads or tails out of there plans. they have a plan for 39.99 but i cant find the data plan that always comes seprate.

us cellular
25 per month (alredy have a plan)

i guess i wont be getting the latest and greatest, just cant swing a plan for the htc touch pro2.....after paying 300-400 for the phone-on ebay. what a bummer

so how much of a differance is the htc touch pro from the 2? will it do the things i need it to?

Unlock Codes: I've never had any experience with these on WinMo but if you unlock your phone, you can use it with any carrier that uses the same transmission technology as the original carrier you bought it with. You may have heard of these: GSM, and CDMA.

GSM/TDMA - T-Mobile, AT&T
CDMA - Verizon, Sprint

If you bought a phone from T-mobile and unlocked it, you can use it on AT&T.

Thats basically it, but it gets more complicated when you get into 3G... Each carrier operates on a different 3G frequency, so while calling will work with unlocked phones, high speed data might not.

---

Windows Mobile:

Windows7 is in the works, it probably wont be available for a while.
Windows6.5 is due out in a couple months
Windows6.1 is currently out and all recently new phones use this.

The Touch Pro is 6.1 and im unsure if its upgradable to 6.5. It probably will but cant be installed the conventional way.

The touch Pro2 is 6.1 and will be upgradable to 6.5.

Windows7 for either phone is probably out of the question.

---

Carriers and Plans

Is reception really that bad where you live? Well you know your place more than I do.. But if normal reception is hard to get, how sketchy is 3G connection? Check carreir coverage maps for 3G.

I'm a major pusher for SPRINT! I think they got the best deals, and are the underdogs.

They offer a data plan for only 49.99? or was it 59.99? Which is dirrrttty cheap for what they offer. A similar plan from ATT is like 100 bucks.

Again though, if you have crappy coverage with sprint in your area its not worth it..

You bought your phone off ebay?
