AT&T to boost network speeds with HSPA 7.2 upgrade

AT&T announced on 9/9/09 its plans to upgrade 3G in six major cities this year. HSPA 7.2 (High Speed Packet Access) provides downlink speeds up to 7.2Mbps and will provide a tremendous boost to AT&T's 3G network speeds. The Apple iPhone's 3GS is HSPA 7.2-ready and users are anticipating on when they will be able to take advantage of the higher-speed data services. However, unless you are in the vicinity of Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, or Miami, we still don't know when the upgrade will be available. AT&T claims that another 19 unnamed major markets will go live by the end of 2010 and the six cities are due to go live before the end of this year.

The AT&T rollout of HSPA 7.2 will be matched with the availability of multiple compatible wireless handsets and devices. The company expects to have six HSPA 7.2-compatible smartphones in its device portfolio by the end of the year.
