Has the era for launching new platforms come to an end?
Entelligence columnist Michael Gartenberg has a different take on the mobile market world. With six main competitors - RIM's BlackBerry, Microsoft's Windows Mobile, Apple's iPhone, Nokia's s60, Palm's WebOS and Google's Android, there is no way that all of them will survive in today's market. That doesn't mean there isn't room for new players to enter the game. The main point is that users are shifting their expectations to what their device an accomplish with third party software or the availability of such software.
The article makes the statement, "as with the personal computer, it's third party developers that are going to define which mobile platform wins and which loses."
Apple introduced their iPhone to the mass market and thus provided a direct path for third parties to connect with their consumers through iTunes and the device itself.
Although the iPhone seems to be the front runner with their Apple App's Store, that does not mean the market is closed. There's just some tough competition out there right now. You've got to be bringing something new to the table to stick it out.
