I really don't use the built-in contact manager very much so although I have looked around at a few alternatives I have not looked very hard to find replacement application. With FunContact 2.1 I may have found that replacement
FunContact is designed for touch, although you can use a stylus. You cannot use dpad or a jog wheel. When you touch anything on the screen the program really “snaps” with smooth animation. VITO Technologies has a brief demo on YouTube that you should take a look at. FunContact is $19.95 and there is a 14 day trial period that is not crippled in any way. FunContact is designed for WM 5 or higher with a touchscreen.
Installation
Both a desktop (.exe) and a cab file install are available.
My first install of FunContact was on my Cingular 8125 (WM5). Since I was pretty strapped for memory on that device I installed to the SD card. However a few days after that install my new AT&T Tilt (WM6) arrived and since I now have what seems like almost unlimited memory (at least for now ) I installed to main memory. The only difference I have found with the installation on the two devices is that the initial startup of FunContact on my Tilt is about four seconds but was eight seconds on the 8125. I think that difference in loading time is more a factor of being installed on the card then the processor of the 8125.
In both cases, however, FunContact is very fast once it's loaded. The memory footprint when running is fairly low so if you use contacts a lot it would really be no big deal to keep the application minimized. Upon installation FunContact becomes your default contact manager. FunContact takes 1.46 megs of storage memory and about 2 megs of memory when running.
When you first launch FunContact you are brought to a “finger friendly” listing of your contacts. Along the bottom of the screen are 4 icons: contact list, favorites (which you can quickly define), caller log and menu. The program displays in full screen mode giving you more real estate for your contacts, but you do lose the top and bottom bars which some users may not like. I am rarely in contacts for longer than it takes to find what I am searching for, so I like having the full screen view.
The Contact List
Contacts will be sorted in the same fashion you were using for the default application. You can get to the contact you want a number of ways. Along the right hand side of the screen is a thin strip with the alphabet. I thought it looked much too small to be able to drag my finger, but it is very easy to do so. As you slide your finger the letters of the alphabet flash mid screen (as in the default app when scrolling) and you stop when you get to the letter you want. You can also move up and down in the contact list by sliding or use a T9 pad that you can display on the screen. In addition to sliding you can also “flick” on the screen (up or down) and make the contact list “free wheel” for screen or so. You can assign pictures to individual contacts (pictures can be in main memory or on a storage card).
Favorites
When you view a specific contact in the contact list there is a star in the upper right hand corner. When you tap on this star it identifies this contact as a “favorite” and those contacts can now be quickly found by tapping the favorite’s icon on the bottom of the screen.
Phone Log
Shows you call log by day with the calls groups by type (missed, outgoing, incoming)
Additional Options
The last icon, when tapped, brings up a dialog from which you can choose New Contact, About (which also takes you to activation), Help (the program is pretty intuitive, but help is there is you want it), Language, Sort (in previous versions your sort option was not saved, but this is corrected in this version), Minimize, Exit or Cancel.
Pros
Once loaded, very quick performance
Easy to use
The animations are smooth all the displays are far superior to the built-in contact manager.
Cons
At $19.95 for a (more or less) single function program is perhaps on the high side, but I would not call it a poor value.
After about a week, I think FunContacts is going to have a permanent home on my Tilt. Now, I’m off to take some pictures of my contacts.
Thank you for the concise review
I was going to do this myself, but I have a Touch and it'd be so similar. I didn't want to have some bias, so that's why I rather have you do the review.
Dear Schmenge, thank you very much for the review. I have some good news about new version of FunContact but before this I will comment on the Con you provide for FunContact ("At $19.95 for a (more or less) single function program is perhaps on the high side").
First of all, I agree at some point. Second of all, there is a way to get FunContact together with onscreen zooming keyboard, finger-friendly launcher & task manager plus threaded texting SMS-Chat, all in all 4 programs sold separately for $70, but in Suite only for $40. Find out more at FunContact product page (will find below). Now to the news.

FUNCONTACT GOT NEW SUIT New stylish black skin for businessmen
June 27, 2008 - VITO Technology releases a new version of FunContact - the best selling contact manager that provides the most exciting and convenient contact management on Windows Mobile touch screen devices. You can do everything with a flick of a finger!
FunContact 2.15 presents two major new features: a new black skin like in the recently released ZoomBoard and SMS-Chat, and also joystick support. The black skin fits perfectly brand-new Windows Mobile devices hitting the market like HTC Diamond, TyTN II, Touch Pro and all other devices from Touch series as they all have dim color theme.
The original "fun" skin is still available and allows even serious businessmen to take their ease on vacation and relax. After all your wife is not going to believe you are actually updating your contacts or looking thru the call history even if she notices the sliding screens with exciting animation and bright colors. She might want to have a play with it though, so beware.
Joystick support has been the outcry from our customers since FunContac was released. New FunContact gives you the choice: you can scroll the list with a finger or with a joystick. Both variants are very convenient, and though the main idea of FunContact is to manage contacts with finger, some FunContact users addicted to joystick now can also benefit by performing all the basic operations in FunContact like calling, texting ,etc. with joystick.
FunContact is available for $19.95 at FunContact - contact manager for Windows Mobile. FunContact supports English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Norwegian, Danish, Portuguese, Greek, Polish, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian.
PS Dear reader, I invite you to take a look at this program and write a review. It may be short, or it may be long and it must be unbiased because as a reward you will get a FREE COPY of FUNCONTACT with a standard support from VITO Technology for 1 year that includes assistance and updates (free). The review must be published somewhere online and include the link to the program page: your favorite forum, or a pda fan site, etc.
At first I missed not being able to use dpad, but now that I have used the program for a bit I don't miss it at all. I'll install the update and give it a whirl though!
