Rumors have been floating around. You might catch part of it as you flip through the news, or being said by the water cooler know-it-all; but wire tapping is real, and has been present in the tele-communications, of the who knows how many people, nation-wide.
Today, the House of representitives passed "the measure, known as the FISA Amendments Act of 2008". What the FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) bill does, is grant additional time for agents to receive warrants after they have committed a wire tap. Reiterating, wire-tapping can happen to anyone, at anytime, for no reason.
-Focus attention- not long ago, the Senate approved a bill, granting retroactive immunity, for any telecoms company that maybe subject to legal retribution by the citizenry, or anything. The House is still divided on this issue and will most likely not be reaching a decision "until after a new president takes office in January".
The political delay may prove to be golden as Bush has sworn to veto any ruling against his pipe dream.
This is the big deal. Retroactive immunity will absolve all past transgressions (some 40 lawsuits), and going forward, provide immunity for any transgressions regarding wiretapping. When was the last time corporations were given legal immunity? 1984.
The dust has not settled on this issue yet, but don't be surprised if you don't hear a bang from this smoking gun. Just remember the next time you change service providers, you may want to read the fine print...
