For all you hardcore gamers, the NPD group has released its latest and greatest for the February sales has been posted and unlike the exciting January sales, this month is just more of the same.
Nintendo DS - 587,600 Wii - 432,000 PlayStation 2 - 351,800 PlayStation 3 - 280,800 Xbox 360 - 254,600 PSP - 243,000
As you can see, Nintendo does lead in sales on both its platforms, with Sony and Microsoft's next gen. hardware trailing slightly.
Sony enthusiasts should be pleased with these figures, as they show strong residual sales from the Play Station 2. Many third party developers are pumping out cult classics and ports for the PS2 that could potentially serve as the strong, new next gen. cult classic franchises that Sony is so infamous for. In any case. just wait until Sqaure's flagship sails, and to laugh loud and well while laughing last.
Microsoft enthusiasts, don't head toward the light! It has been confirmed with the wii, that the online functionality of its strong franchise names, is amazingly lacking. Feel free to chuckle as, multi-player has always been a strong point of the xbox live network. This plus the nice balance of feel, price and power, might make the 360 the most enticing choice out of the next gen. for third party developers. What the 360 really needs, is to tap into the established franchise markets. I'm sure that Sony and Nintendo are doing everything in their power, but imagine what a multi-platform release of Final Fantasy 13 might do to Nintendo/Sony's numbers.
However you interperet the numbers, "Total hardware sales for February were at $480 million, up from the previous year which saw $402 million for the month." The gaming industry is growing, and I don't believe that the market has become magnetized to the point where no newcomers can break in. Each of the platforms have their specific gripes, and much of the gaming market has not committed to a next gen. system.
Now is the time! Rise up! Make your own console! Use subtle media influences, take the world!
