The European Telecommunications Standards Institute has accepted the GSMA's near field communications technical specifications. They have set the specifications for the software protocols to operate the communication between the SIM card and the phone's NFC chip. Now that a standard has been set, mobile phones with NFC chips can be made in large volumes, and network operators will be able to deploy contactless payment services that use NFC technology. Hopefully we can get this implemented in the US.
