Oh la la ... that's almost all I was going to say when I saw that headline on the article. The upcoming Xohm WiMAX internet service from Sprint now has a more firm release window and a uniquely flex rate structure.
They launched the WiMAX for major cities before and now they believe that they are ready to roll it out for the whole country! (of course, that's a figure of speech). It was doing the soft-launched since December and will be ready for the formal release by late April. They will probably start with where they had the soft launch and will see how far will they be ready to go.
Their subscription fees will be similar to the WiFi hotspots that other companies might be doing. The subscribers will have the option of buying as little as a day or week of access in addition to more common month-to-month plans and year-plus contracts. They are not ready to tell about the rates just yet. "People will be excited about our rates," says Sprint CTO Barry West. "They won't be ecstatic about them because we're not going to give it away." That probably means that it'll cost 2 legs and an arm.
The saddest thing is that, mobile phone users probably cannot use it at the time of the formal launch, since most device listed are notebook cards and an external modem. Some are the device that is made to work with WiMAX from the factory, such as the new ASUS updated Eee PC.
Whenever this thing comes out, I'll be very excited. I only hope that they'll also have the firmware upgrade for those who are toughing it out with the Sprint Mogul and the Sprint Touch, who lost the ability to connect through WiFi. I also hope that it won't cost as much as I'm expecting too!
