Google announced Android, an Open Source Operating System for Smartphones.
That finally comes out after several months of rumors and speculations. Not to mention false hopes and dreams that never accomplished (although we never know if it'll be later on). It is an operating system for mobile devices and it is developing in partnership with a wide veriety of companies.
The operating system by Google is not expected to be in the market until the second half of next year. Although it has Google's name slapped all over the place, it is actually being developed and created by Open Handset Alliance. It's a combination of companies working towards the same goal. The companies are: Intel, Texas Instrument, Sprint, T-Mobile, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, Wind River and 26 other companies. (dang)
The goal of creating Andrio is stated with their statement "common goal of fostering innovation on mobile devices and giving consumers a far better user experience than much of what is avbailable on today's mobile platforms."
The Open Handset Alliance really is opened to the idea of third party application. You can get their SDK (Software Development Kit) on November 12th, 2007.
More about Android. It is a Lunux-based operating system that will be opened for third-parties to create applications by using Java.
