AOL on Mobile Phones

For a few years now AOL has been like a web portal to the mobile web streaming community. Offering services and utilities that assist those with their day to day, business and personal tasks. Just a few days ago, AOL introduced a repertoire of services for those in the latest mobile market at San Fransisco's CTIA Wireless show.

AOL claims that their web portal optimizes your web experience by automatically detecting your type of phone, therefore knowing its capabilities. Therefore the beginning of the list applications start off with updates to AOL Search and Mail, while also focusing on upgraded versions of Mapquest and Moviefone by expanding content in areas of shopping, music, news, and other entertainment.

They also are launching a program by the name of "Winamp Remote", which allows users to access their very own music and video libraries from your mobile phone, and even comes with a feature to allow your to share music and video streams with whoever you'd like. In order to use the Winamp remote, you have to install the player onto your desktop, login to your Winamp account through AOL.com in the entertainment channel on your phone. Also, make sure that your phone is WAP-enabled, if not then this service will not work.

As most of us know, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) has been a craze for quite some time now. Offered on some phones such as the T-Mobile Dash, folks are able to use the application via their mobile connection to access their own Screen Name and Buddy List to chat with their friends and family. Now AOL is looking past that, and expanding to make sure that AIM does not have to be just an application installed onto a phone, but actually created a SMS messaging service (text messaging) that lets anyone have the familiar AIM chat interface. In order to try it out, text AIMAIM’ (246246).

Another cool application is the WHERE mobile widget. This little pup allows you to find your friends and their whereabouts using your GPS enabled mobile device. You can then see where they are using Mapquest.

And last but not least, AOL's new on-device application, "MyMobile" lets users learn and remember user favorites and recent requests. The app will be ready for download by the end of 2007, and is said to the better of the new releases since it is installed directly to your Windows Mobile based smartphone, and not web based.
