AT&T is considering participating in the 700MHz open source frequency band auction. The company has opposed the rules of the auction, but because of the extremely long range of the 700MHz band, they have deemed that it might be worth the investment. "It's a huge opportunity," he said. "It's beachfront property. When it comes to buying spectrum, it's the best you're going to find for a long time." CEO Randal Stephen said. The carrier already agreed to buy a different part of the 700MHz band from Aloha partners for 2.5 billion. From that deal alone, AT&T could potentially supply the internet needs of about 196 million people. Auction for the 700MHz is due to start in January, so get your wallets out!
