Broadcom, a semiconductor firm today announced the introduction of the BCM2727. It is a new multimedia processor that will unlock features that were previously impossible to obtain in portable handheld devices. Based on VideoCore III architecture, the chip has the power to decode and encode HD video in real-time, with out excessive power consumption. It can play 720p video in H.264 format for up to 5 hours on a cellphone sized battery. It can also record up to three hours. Even more amazing is the BDM2727’s ability to process 12-megapixal still photos with image stabilization, and red eye reduction. Currently it is believed that samples of the chipset are available now to companies willing to test and use the chip in devices.
