Taiwan based Commercial Times reported today that HTC has received ODM orders of Windows Mobile based smartphones from Sony Ericsson. Sony Ericsson will market the new smartphones in the second half of 2008. This will be Sonys Ericsson’s first Windows Mobile-based smartphone and HTC’s first ODM order from such a first class handset vendor. Shipments of the new phone are expected to top over a million, accounting for 10% to 20% of HTC’s gross projected shipments for 2008. HTC stock jumped 4% shortly after the news was announced.
Fake - the phone shown above is the Sony Ericsson "P1", which runs Symbian OS with the UIQ interface...
It's not available in most parts of the Western World yet, but I've used working models and they do indeed run the above operating system; Sony Ericsson sources of mine (I work in the telecommunications industry) have also confirmed that this will be the case for the Western release also.
It's disappointing though, 'cause Sony Ericsson make fantastic phones and if they were to release a Windows Mobile device tomorrow, I would not think twice about paying the ~$1500 to pay-out my existing plan and upgrade...
Sony, Ericsson and Microsoft - what an awsome combination!
