Recently, it seems as if Google has been pushing hard for mobility. Last week, Google filed a patent for billing via SMS. The idea is similar to what Sony’s Felica system aims to do, yet its adapted for the US market. Sonys Felica’s relies on chips and an infrastructure for users to make purchases, but Google’s method uses existing technology, making it cheaper to implement. Imagine paying for groceries using your phone! You might never have to carry a wallet around again.
The invention is, according to the application:
A computer-implemented method of effectuating a payment, comprising: receiving at a computer server system a text message from a payor containing a payment request comprising a payment amount sent by a payor device operating independently of the computer server system; debiting a payor account for an amount corresponding to the amount of the payment request; and crediting a payee account that is independent of the computer server system.
