Mark your calendars! January 18th marks the day of the FCC’s 700MHz auction. Google stated that they would be willing to offer up $4.6 billion for the spectrum if the conditions Google set were met. The FCC followed through with many of what Google requested but not all of them. One big issue that Google pushed for was the “wholesale condition.” This would require the auction winner to resell wireless bandwidth to other businesses. Ben Scott, Washington policy director for Free Press which is on Google states, “What that would have done is create a wireless broadband market that looked like the dial-up market of the late 90s where users had hundreds of vendors to choose from.” Yet, Google is still considering participating in the bid, but are unsure as the new circumstances has forced Google to study the text more carefully.
