Less than 4 percent of Iraqis use land line phones, as most of its infrastructure has been destroyed. Iraqis rely heavily on the cellular infrastructure that’s currently being serviced on three short-term contracts that the US awarded in 2003. Those short-term contracts are about to expire and the Iraqi government will pick three carriers to service the country for 15 years. The bidding started at $300 million in addition to a cut of 18% on revenues. The winners of the bids, Mobile Telecommunications, Asiacell, and Korek Telecom paid a price of $3.75 billion to obtain the licenses.
