Word on the street is that another smartphone is coming to Palm, Inc.—the Treo 800w! Why there is so much “buzz” about the prospects of this phone is because it will have a newer version of Windows Mobile—the Windows Mobile 6 Professional! This is the first version that can sustain the quality resolution that the device's 320-by-320 pixel touchscreen provides. But that's not all. The Treo 800w will be the first smartphone from Palm to have a built-in Wi-Fi. The Treo 800w will be a replacement for the Treo 700wx—which has been available in the US for about a year now—and will be accessible from two of the largest CDMA carriers in the US: Verizon and Sprint. The Treo 800w is expected from Verizon in September, and sometime during the fourth quarter of this year for Sprint.
Here are some more details on the Treo 800w:
128 MB of RAM
256 MB of Flash ROM
1.3 megapixel camera
320-by-320 pixel touchscreen
Windows Mobile 6 Professional
Built-in Wi-Fi
EV-DO Revision A (enables faster data transfer speeds)
Includes a built-in GPS receiver
Memory card slot
Bluetooth
No word on processor speed is currently available
Although this could only be a rumor, the chances of the Treo 800w emerging is highly likely, as the CEO of Palm, Inc., Edward T. Colligan states this: “We do believe Wi-Fi is an important technology…There’s no question that we’ll ultimately put it in our products, but at the right time.” Could the “right time” be approaching us soon? We sure hope so!
